Beer Thirty with PQ of Cell Press

Welcome to the land of the side piece, and let's be honest, there's no better side piece than a cold beer.

Today's band, Cell Press, features members of lots of other bands, most notably The Great Sabatini.

Vocalist of the group, PQ, has deigned us (or perhaps the topic) worthy of response and for that we are forever grateful.

Check out their latest album on BANDCAMP while PQ makes you thirsty.

1. My personal favorite beer style is the mighty Double India Pale Ale. The best DIPA in the world is STLIPA by Urban Chestnut. Tell me about your favorite style.

Oh yeah baby.

Gotta love the double IPA! I also love it because it's strong! Can’t drink it all night though but def my favorite “appetizer” hehe.

We are lucky here in Montreal to have many different great microbreweries, my personal favorite to visit is probably “Le Cheval Blanc” down in the Latin quarter.

Just delicious beers!

2. Many international people have laughed at me for this, but American Beer is the best in the world. Not American Lagers, that piss water is best used for drinking 15 of them while you're at the karaoke bar, but American Craft Beer. Which nation is pumping out the best beer?

Naw man, It’s def Canada. American beer is pure piss. I guess you'll have to change my mind next time we roll through town! :)

(Note: If you play Red Flag, your first STLIPA is on me. The brewery is literally about 10 blocks up the street.)

3. Even though I'm a giant beer snob, I'll drink beers that break the Bavarian Purity Laws. My personal favorite is Schalfly's Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout. It's a might 22oz of 10% ABV Stout aged in bourbon barrels. It'll warm your heart and soul.

What beers do you love that break Reinheitsgebot?

I Fucking love fruity beers, raspberry beer with a good cheese plate is unbeatable on a hot summer day.

If we treated music like these “Bavarian Purity Laws” you speak of, my band would be a brussels sprout citrus 16% beer that tastes like heaven.

Fuck laws and traditions when it comes to art and brewing is definitely an art. Shit should always be moving forward and evolving.

4. Right now, you couldn't pin me down and get me to give my favorite St. Louis Brewery, though Urban Chestnut's STLIPA does put them in the lead...but if you put a gun to my head, it's Schlafly Brewing.

What do you think of your local brewers?

First of all, shout out to he 2019 Stanley cup champions St Louis Blues, now that's out of the way, our local brewers are awesome, the culture is very big here in Quebec, I really hope that they all made it through the covid, but it seems like we are far from over this shit and a lot of bars and small businesses are closing.

Let's hope the culture survives this shit!

Also, big shout outs to the drummer in my high school band Mike Perreault out in North Bay Ontario, making some absolutely smashing brews at the Gateway City Brewery & also the Bassist in that band, T Plaque just crushing the brewing game out in Vancouver.

5. Hops or Malt? Personally, I feel like a jerk for asking the question. Give me a malty Scottish/Scotch Ale or a hoppy DIPA...and I'm happy...but you gotta pick one.

Malty Scottish ale, as a first-generation Canadian of Scottish descent I gotta stick with that.

6. Whenever I'm road tripping. I'm always bringing back beers. Ohio, Great Lakes Brewing. East Coast, Yuengling. Western New  York. Genessee. What do you bring home?

I haven't been to the states in probably 7 or 8 years, but when I travel outside of Quebec (inside Canada) I usually bring the beers with me instead of bringing the beers home.

Quebec beer rules. Cheers!!!
