Album Review: "Hard Time" by Lady Flint

Hard Time
Any time an artist reaches out to me with their album, I do try very hard to check it out.

Unfortunately, not everything meets my criteria, and sometimes things just get forgotten.

Today, I received an email from a band way over in France called Lady Flint.

Well, the name was interesting as was their email, back and forth we went and here we are talking about that album.

Hard Time is the debut album from the French Blues-Rock duo, though they had an EP out last year as well.

Hard Time is being released on digital formats and on vinyl in September. Due to my recent vinyl switch, I'm definitely going to get in on that action...

Lady Flint
Remember about three years ago when these blues rock duos were all the rage? Shoot, Left Lane Cruiser got a bassist.

The Hooten Hallers picked up a tuba player.

So many are filling out the line ups, but Lady Flint is keeping it old school with just a guitarist and a drummer.

Needless to say, the music is gritty and thick. When you've only got little bits, the guitars really have to be something.

Blues shuffles all abound, but you won't hear any classic 12 Bar Blues tunes on this album.

The guitar is fuzzed out, riffy, and hits all the right notes. The drums are the backbone. We're not seeing a whole lot of super fancy drumming, or guitar work for that matter, but the pieces fit together perfectly.

With a small lineup, it's easy to fall into the AC/DC trap, but Lady Flint keep things varied and awesome all the way through.

If you're a fan of early Black Keys or the other duos I mentioned up above, check out Lady Flint and you're not going to be disappointed.
