LP Review: "Triumphant Master of Fates" by Vimur

Triumphant Master of Fates
The Vimur River is the largest of the Elivagar Rivers that were formed at the beginning of the world.

At least, that's what Norse Mythology tells us.

One would assume that this band would be more than than just some standard black metal band right?

They'd be powerful and unrelenting. Their music would be able to stand up to not just the slings and arrows of the enemies of trve kvlt vlvck metal, but the stone of time as well.

Right?

That's actually a pretty good description of what Vimur has accomplished. Being an American Black Metal band featuring the traditions of Ancient Norsemen, they straddle two worlds and the songs reflect that.

Most of the time Triumphant Master of Fates features the slightly left of center American black metal, but sometimes moves into the more traditional fares of Scandinavian bands.

EP Review: "Inability to Cope" by Misanthropic Aggression

Inability to Cope EP
Let's get right down two it shall we?

Today's subject is a slightly confused, but very metal trio based out of Atlanta, GA. Boris Records was good enough to bring them and record the debut EP.

Between these three gentlemen, they play about 5 instruments. Interestingly enough, they switch off who plays bass, It makes me wonder if there's a heads or tails scenario or perhaps a not it protocol.

Because you gotta lay down the bass or you might as well not lay down the law.

Inability To Cope is a eight track, 20 minute hello to the world. In those six tracks, Misanthropic Aggression switches between death metal, grindcore, and early groove metal. This is a lot of ground to cover in a very short time.

It's been a goodly long while since a brand new band has been able to catch me so unawares with their ability. It's oddly reminiscent of Noisem, but I find Misanthropic Aggression more a more enjoyable experience.

It's time to chew on my nails in anticipation of a true debut, perhaps on vinyl, as this toothsome appetizer hasn't satisfied my urge, but amplified it.

Vinyl Review: "Sealed Shut" by Haunting

Sealed Shut
There is one thing metal does better than most other genres of music...

Metal respects its ancestors like no other.

On the same shelf, you can find brand new modern metal sitting right next to, shall we say, vintage styled metal.

So, let's think back to the early 90's when extreme metal was still crawling out of the crypt before bands like Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Morbid Angel broke out of Tampa Bay.

In those days, there were scores of bands who deserved more but didn't make it. They didn't make it because they never had the money to promote, to record, etc. So, what ended up happening were EPs, Maxi-Singles, and rehearsal tapes.

In 2018, there are still those kinds of bands, but it's different now. In 1992, a black and white album cover wasn't the stylistic choice it is now, but a necessity.

What we have here is an interesting juxtaposition of both being modern, but also being extinct. Haunting existed for only a brief time and the only music they ever put to tape is this EP, Sealed Shut.

LP Review: "Kneel Before None" by Death of Kings

Kneel Before None
We all come to music a little bit differently. Some of us are lucky enough to have parents that share music. In fact, that's the type of parent I'm trying to be.

Some of us have older siblings, or friends.

My journey largely started with my cousins. When we were at a very young age, music was a big part of our lives. So, when those formative years cross my mind, there are always stories from my youth with Jamie and Al.

There was a time before Thrash Metal was widely recognized as anything. (Naturally, it was a thing, as this was the mid to late Eighties.)

We were sitting on their front porch while I was visiting. Plenty of Marlboros lit and burning. There was talk of heading out to this place called Candyband. As this was utterly foreign to me, I asked, what do you do at Candyband?

7" Vinyl Review: "Hell Comes To Life" by Death of Kings

Hell Comes To Life
Today we're talking about 7" vinyl.

In all of our vinyl reviews this is the first, but it won't be the last as we have a small pile of 7" records to review.

Last week our vinyl review was that of a record without the sleeve, so there wasn't an unboxing video. In this case, and with future 7" Records, there still won't be any unboxing videos. It seems, just kind of wrong to do so, but the same sort of packaging discussion will be all over the review itself.

In the past, we have done reviews on digital 7" releases, but this will be our first go with the real McCoy as it were.

You may recall our friends, Death of Kings, from an earlier interview. They gave some great information about who they are and what they do. You may wish to refresh yourself here. They have had a few 7" releases in the past and this one is on Boris Records.

Their full length debut will also be out later this year on Boris Records. You should make sure you check back by for the review.

Interview: Death of Kings "No filler"

Death of Kings
In the Glacially Musical Statistical Headquarters of Greater Metro Atlanta, located near the trash bin in the Avondale Marta Station, Westbound Side, Death of Kings was kind enough to speak to me.

Thankfully, we needed to crunch the numbers that day.

Death of Kings is a heavy thrash band from Atlanta, so the timing all worked out. Over the years, they've changed things up a bit.

They are on the cusp of releasing both their latest 7" EP and debut LP on Boris Records.

Check out what's going on in their world below.

Glacially Musical:  Thanks for taking some time for us today. Tell me a bit about how the band started.

Matt Matson- I had previously been in a hardcore punk/metal band called The Despised as well as a rock/punk band called Das Manics.

Album Review: "A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death" by Morbid Slaughter

A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death
There are some of my readers who really hate this kind of music.

Then there are others who love extreme metal.

I also have a few who'll at least check these posts out because they've got an open mind about music, and let's face it.... it takes a mind as wide open as the Grand Canyon to really consider this if you're not already a fan.

I took some time away from writing about extreme metal and I'm missing it.

So today we're perusing the Peruvian band, Morbid Slaughter.

They formed in Lima, Peru back in 2009. It's kind of surprising that this is their debut full length album. Well, let's check out what our new friends have for us.
