Interview: New Orleans's Own, Miss Mec

Miss Mec
I can't ever really tell you how music arrives to me, at least not for everything.

I received an email asking if I would be interested in checking out the debut EP of Miss Mec, from New Orleans, LA.

Well, I was interested and I found an artist who collaborated with a few other musicians in order to create an EP that was both highly original and very classic sounding.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how the sounds sounded, and I'm not talking about the quality of songwriting or the liquidness of the fingers of the guitarist, but the songs just popped off of the CD.

It's very rare to get that warm and organic sound out of a piece of digital music.

It does make me wonder if hearing their songs in iTunes would have the same effect, but who knows right? The EP was long enough for us to meet her and short enough to leave us wanting more.

So, in the hopes of getting more, here's a bit of information about our new favorite songsgress.

Glacially Musical: I really loved your album, but I'm having a hard time describing precisely what it is. How would you put it into words?

Miss Mec: It's americana music, which means its a mixture of roots, old time rock, country, and R&B.

GM: There seems to be an influence of some old time music there. Where's it coming from?

MM: The old time music definitely comes from living in New Orleans.

You can't escape the influence because it's being performed all over the city. Musicians get their start playing traditional music.

GM: What is your live set like?

MM:So far it's been a basic setup. Vocals, lead guitar, bass and drums.

Pretty raw and intimate.

GM: What about the band, how long have you been together?

MM: We have been together for only 6 months.

I was in a rock and roll group for three years and decided to leave in order to pursue my original material.

GM: Are we going to see that on tour any time soon?

MM: Well the lead guitar player is moving to New York so I got to rearrange some things, but I'm planning to get out on the road.

GM: Tell me what you think the five most important albums of all time are.

MM: My five top albums would be:

Bob Marley- Legend

Tupac- Me Against The World

Amy Winehouse- Back To Black

Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Ray Charles- The Great Ray Charles

GM: How do you write a song?

MM: I am motivated to write about situations that I have personally been in.

It is hard for me to write outside myself, but I have been practicing.

GM: What could you improve about "So Damn True?"

MM: What I would improve for the ep is too shorten up the songs. I felt like I could if made it tighter.

GM: What was your recording session like?

MM: The recording session was all done very fast and with live tracks. We basically recorded it live and then added some solo parts

GM: Well, what else do we need to know about you and your music?

MM: Check out my webpage for updates http://www.missmec.com
