LP Review: "Darkness..." by Mordor

Darknes...
In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair...

It's been almost fifty years since Robert Plant put that line on wax in the classic track, Ramble On.

In 1986, that was the first time I'd ever heard anyone say Mordor that I could recall. The Rings cartoon movie...never saw the whole thing and never got past Frodo talking about his missing finger

Yes years later, those Peter Jackson movies....they're on my shelf on blu-ray, but Randall Graves was right.

He was right.

Today's Mordor isn't a Led Zeppelin clone, nor do they seem to be writing songs about The Lord of the Rings. It's just that their name made me think of other things and past experiences that make me smile.

Mordor
This is Poland's Mordor who were the precursors of the Polish Doom Metal scene.

It's been a long time since they've reared their heads and blessed us with any new music.

Nearly a quarter century has come and gone since 1997's The Earth.

As this reviewer is  unfamiliar with their two previous releases, I can only speak to this one.

This isn't a doom album, but nearly a death album. Doom/Death as I'm given to understand. If there's another sub-genre cross pollination better than doom/death, I've never heard of it.

Darkness... is a masterwork of the genre. It's angry enough to feature growled vocals and doomy enough to bring the sorrow. It's slightly doomier than it is deathy, but both metal sub-genres are in full effect. Mordor's ability to meld the two should be the envy of all other bands.

These songs make me feel trapped and isolated. The melodic passages are morose and lingering. The tracks are never in any sort of hurry. It adds the feels.

These songs are a groundswell of gloom until they can't take it anymore. Then they get mad as hell and strike back.

The back and forth keeps the entire album, and it's a long one, fresh.
