Beer Thirty with Mike of Unendlich

Good day! Today we're talking about one of my personal favorite beverages in the world and that's beer.

My daughter, when she does her impersonation of me...she puts on hand on her hip, swings her other and says "I'm Daddy. I like records and beer."

Seriously, she has me down pat. So, because of that, and because of all the beers I've had with rockers as we sat across the table during interview before shows...let's find out what the folks out there are drinking when they're not drinking something besides beer.

We're starting off Beer Thirty with the main brain behind Baltimore, MD's black metal band... Unendlich.

If you're getting thirsty, check out the BANDCAMP and FACEBOOK.

1. My personal favorite beer style is the might Double India Pale Ale. The best DIPA in the world is STLIPA by Urban Chestnut. Tell me about your favorite style.

I enjoy IPAs as well. I don’t mind double IPAs when I want a bit more potency though some tend to have a pretty harsh aftertaste, so after a few heavy beers I tend to switch to spirits.

I also enjoy the smoothness of beers on nitro. Some of my favorite beers are: Oskar Blues Pinner - Throwback IPA Union Craft Brewing - Duckpin Pale Ale (There is a Double Duckpin as well but the IBU is 90 so a bit too bitter for my enjoyment) Red Shedman Farm Brewery - Lights Out Oatmeal Nitro Stout

2. Many international people have laughed at me for this, but American Beer is the best in the world. Not American Lagers, that piss water is best used for drinking 15 of them while you're at the karaoke bar, but American Craft Beer. Which nation is pumping out the best beer?

I enjoy German beer having lived in Würzburg across from the Bitburger pilsner plant early in my life. I wasn’t drinking beer at that point but my parents were and as I grew older and we moved back to the United States they’d still have various German beers around the house.

Couple more popular ones I enjoy are Köstritzer (Schwarzbier), Paulaner (Hefe-Weizen), and of course Bitburger Premium Pils! Though my favorite libation export from Germany is not beer but a brandy called Asbach.

In general though I agree that American craft breweries are killing it. Just in the state I am in (Maryland) and Pennsylvania I’ve found some beers I love. While vacationing in Washington State, Oregon, and North Carolina I went to dozens of awesome small breweries.

3. Even though I'm a giant beer snob, I'll drink beers that break the Bavarian Purity Laws. My personal favorite is Schalfly's Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout. It's a might 22oz of 10% ABV Stout aged in bourbon barrels. It'll warm your heart and soul. What beers do you love that break Reinheitsgebot?

Wicked Weed’s Black Angel Sour - aged in bourbon barrels on tart cherries. Red Shedman’s Lights Out Oatmeal Nitro Stout Red Shedman’s Lunatic Fringe - Belgian IPA infused with fresh Habanero peppers. Red Shedman’s The Reaper - Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout

3. Right now, you couldn't pin me down and get me to give my favorite St. Louis Brewery, though Urban Chestnut's STLIPA does put them in the lead...but if you put a gun to my head,it's Schlafly Brewing. What do you think of your local brewers?

They’re Great. Maryland has some great breweries with Union and Red Shedman being two favorites and Pennsylvania’s Lancaster Brewing Company being another.

I have a friend opening up a farm brewery soon which I’m really looking forward to.

4. Hops or Malt? Personally, I feel like a jerk for asking the question. Give me a malty Scottish/Scotch Ale or a hoppy DIPA...and I'm happy...but you gotta pick one.

I tend to enjoy less sweet flavors so would have to say hops.

5. Whenever I'm road tripping. I'm always bringing back beers. Ohio, Great Lakes Brewing. East Coast, Yuengling. Western New York. Genessee. What do you bring home?

The hardest part about finding great beers on vacation is that so often many are unavailable when I get back home. It makes you appreciate these good finds even more while you have them.

Hood River, Oregon - Logsdon Farmhouse Ales’ Straffe Drieling and Oak Aged Bretta Asheville, North Carolina - Wicked Weed’s Napoleon Complex and Black Angel Sour Asheville, North Carolina - Burial Beer Co.’s Bonedagger American Pale Ale and Consequences of Humanity In addition to Burial’s beers being great, the can artwork could easily be on a metal album cover or shirt.

Space Reaper from DC Brau Brewing also has some bad-ass can art. Part of what got me into metal as a kid were the killer album covers from Slayer, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden so I especially appreciate it when brewers put effort into really unique designs.

Thanks for the interview and be sure to checkout Unendlich “Thanatophobia” if you’re a fan of black metal while enjoying some of your favorite beer.
