LP Review: "Cavern of Foul Unbeings" by Ectoplasma

Cavern of Foul Unbeings
Look, I don't want to be that guy, but it's not the right season for this music.

So, for the past three months or so, I've been screaming at the world, it's not Christmas time yet!

My daughter, my wife, my boss, my every single god damned store...

But now, here I am again and what is there than can be said in my defense? There's nothing to say for me and my actions are indefensible...much like a vote for Donald J Trump.

Memento Mori has sliced open a vein and putrid death metal is pouring out. You may have noticed the post on Rotheads. This record label has been looking for the bands that wish 5150's never happened.

Ectoplasma
So, we have this band, Ectoplasma, that sounds like they're walking out of Morrisound Studios circa 1989.

The biggest reason why they're not recording there is because these degenerate gentlemen are Greeks.

Now, unless someone didn't tell me that the studio relocated to Athens, they didn't have that opportunity.

They do look the part though, look at those camo shorts. Obituary would be pleased in both aesthetic and sound.

Vocally we're talking about those classic gargled water with broken glass in it. It's not the kind where they were gargling water with lots of glass shards in it, because those are over the top. This kind of sounds like how Entombed took the Tampa Bay sound and articulated it up a little bit.

The guitars...woo...we're talking about some thicky thick riffage. Ectoplasma knows how to layer a guitar sound and make it feel like coagulated blood.

Another thing they did that so many death metallers choose to give amiss, they added Pink Floyd style sound effects...well sound effects...more like snippets of terrifying dialog.

Death Metal shouldn't be scary. If I can listen to you record to go to sleep to, you might maybe have missed the mark and spent too much time being Heavier Than Thou.

That's right, I'll say it, put the Scary back in Death Metal.

Like this.
