Foods We Love With Barren Heir

Recently, we talked to Coke Goat about what they eat and we're lucky to have Barren Heir, the other side of the split to do the same thing.

Barren Heir is also from the Windy City.

The split, Sunshing/Tracing The Light, with Coke Goat will be their first since 2016's Tired Turns, which is interestingly still available on cassette tape.

You can check all of that out on the Bandcamp page, where you can also pre-order the aforementioned split on glorious vinyl.

But in the meantime, let's get into the latest edition of Foods We Love. Barren Heir gave me not only the answers we seek, but a mystery to solve....

1. For me, lunch is usually the meal where I don't have to deal with the Napoleon of Food. So it's my favorite meal. What's your best meal of the day?

Breakfast… at dinner time.

2. What's your most important meal of the day?

Is there a difference between best and important? Dinner. It’s the one meal I eat everyday.

3. In St. Louis we have a local delicacy called the slinger. What's your hometown's delicacy? We prefer this to be an expose...tell us what only the locals know.

Woah. This is a loaded question… loaded like a slinger. Not to undermine your pride in St. Louis cuisine (whatever that means) but the slinger has a presence in Chicago.

Check out Diner Grill if you’re ever in town. The real question is, do you have super slingers (a slinger with two cheeseburger patties and pancakes on top) in St.Louis? (ed note: I'm in town every January. This will happen.)

Besides this (and excluding pizza—there is enough out there about pizza in Chicago). The Italian Beef at Portillo’s— perfect.

The breaded-steak sandwich at Ricobene’s— extraterrestrial. Do you like Doughnuts?

Cause I fucking love them. Stan’s, Firecakes, Do-Rite… others, all phenomenal.

4. Breakfast. When I'm not taking down a slinger, it's all about bacon and breakfast potatoes/hash browns in my house. What about you?

Real quick— can I just say that breakfast has the best food at the worst time. And also, people who prefer breakfast sausage to bacon piss me off, because their tastebuds are clearly inferior.

At either rate, any combination of cheese, egg and potatoes with a stack of pancakes or a half dozen slices of french toast to wash it down with is an ideal breakfast scenario.

5. I like my coffee cold and my tea with milk in it. What's your preferred caffeine delivery device?

Before I answer, I need you to know that you’re a real weirdo for asking these, very particular food-based questions. Anyway, I like my coffee to reflect my soul— black and lukewarm.

6. I've largely stopped drinking soda, because I could use those calories for beer. Where are you at here?

I stopped regularly drinking soda back in high school. I still enjoy a frosty Mountain Dew or a Coke from McDonald’s every now and again, but that’s about it.

7. Best beer/spirit/whatever?

Bullet bourbon and Sierra Nevada. End of story.

8. I'm a Philistine when it comes to pairings. I just drink what I want with my food. What about you?

You’re still a weirdo for asking these questions, but I agree with you, food parings piss me off. Honestly, what’s the point in imposing your recommendation on somebody?

And then if I don’t wanna go along with your pairing suggestion I’m the asshole? To each their own I guess...
