Interview: Tom of 20 Watt Tombstone

In the not too distant past, we reviewed a split EP from 20 Watt Tombstone and Left Lane Cruiser.

Both of these acts play what I call Psychobilly Blues and it was a glorious six track ride that really pushed some limits.

It's time to get to know 20 Watt Tombstone.

Glacially Musical: It seemed like now was the right time to look back on an amazing split record. 20 Watt Tombstone and Left Lane Cruiser teamed up to make, Death Blues vs The Dirty Spliff.

I'd like to know more about 20 Watt and I'm sure my readers would to. So tell me about the band's philosophy.

20 Watt Tombstone: We just like to play, no real philosophy really. I guess you could say we like to live by the DIY code. We do everything ourselves or locally if we can. We try to use local artists and local printers for our shirts, and posters, etc. If we cant do it locally we find other DIY types or other musicians to give our money to, rather than pay some company or a person we don't know.

GM: Give me an idea of what "death blues" are...

20: The term "Death Blues" came from Freddie J IV of Left lane cruiser.

He called our style "Death Blues" and it stuck. We take elements of blues and mix in elements of metal and rock.

Mitch does his growl/yells which are pretty close to death metal growls, so the term just stuck. We feel like it describes us well.

GM: I was under the impression this EP was going to be released on vinyl, I'd definitely like to get one of those for myself, do you have any news on that?

20: Vinyl is coming for sure!! It usually takes a bit and we wanted to get the CD and digital stuff out to people so we released that while Vinyl was in production.

We are hoping for Oct. or Nov. release of vinyl.

GM: Most of my readers know this one's coming....but what are the five most important albums of all time?

20: That's tough,
If we are talking the most important albums to modern rock music of all time, its tough to narrow it to 5.

SO many HUGE influential records. Can I do ten instead of five?

I would have to say (in no particular order): The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers, Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley, Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, The Stooges - Raw Power, Jimi Hendrix - Are You experienced?, Prince & the Revolution - Purple Rain, Run DMC - Run DMC, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV, and finally ANY of the Chess Records sessions that Muddy Waters did.

Its tough picking only a few..so many influential albums. (Note: few of my interviewees choose only five...)

GM: Tell me what an album is.

20: I guess, My take is that an album is a compilation of songs by an artist or artists. The album can be transferred to any media really, Vinyl, Compact Disc, Cassette.

From growing up in the 80's "album" always meant vinyl, so i still associate the word with that.

GM: There aren't many psychobilly blues acts running around anymore, what's the secret to keeping it going?

20: We just do what we do and try to have fun, forward momentum and new content are always the focus.

We try to keep new merch and online content as fresh as possible. We are always adding songs to our live set as well. We dont use a set list so the sets are always different too.

We are trying to keep new music coming as quickly as we can too. No one likes a band that has the same shit for sale every show!

GM: Do you have a tour lined up? I'm presuming we'll be seeing you here in St. Louis, as we're just down I-55....

20: We would like to hit St. Louis! No immediate plans to hit Missouri, but we would love to in the future!

We are in planning stages for a tour in November down the east coast to Florida and back, and possibly one out to Arizona and back. We will have more info on those as they develop on our sites.

GM: Is there anything else we need to know?

20:
We like to hear from fans, find us on www.20watttombstone.com and on all the usual social media like facebook and twitter. like us and follow us for updates on where we will be and new merch, etc.
