Sophomore Jinx with Starcrazy

When's the last time you watched Futurama?

That has nothing to do with this and I'm sorry I even brought it up, but most of my newer shows are on hiatus, so, back to Bender baby and he does love a challenge.

So, this band, Starcrazy, is glam + RUSH...

You find out at the BANDCAMP and I'll find out about their football team.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

Well in Australia we don't have "sophomore" year, we just have Primary School and High School.

Sophomore Jinx with Nicarus

Today, we have somewhat of a first, Nicarus, is from Israel and she's going to give us a look back at how she was in high school.

That's kind of awesome.

Of course you know, I'd like you to be all about her BANDCAMP.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school.

Tell me about your circle of friends.

In high school I was mainly hanging with the boys, they were fun, it was in fashion to wear black long leather  coats back then and listen to Marilyn Manson.

I had red dreadlocks and very strange outlook, you couldn't miss me, we were a bunch of weirdos and freaks compare to the rest, we used to skip class and just chill and make stupid jokes.

Sophomore Jinx with Alexander

When you just haven't ever had enough, you continue to listen, to enjoy, and to share what others have done.

We're hearing again from Alexander.

Check out their tunes HERE.

1. There is nothing more awkward than the sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

I was known and well-liked by all of the different crowds in high school but never fit in any.  Hung out with a small group of outsiders who were cool people at the time.  I was very introverted but got on quite well socially also.

Sophomore Jinx with The Inferno Doll

Up there in Canada, they're growing a very strong dark folk metal scene. I really don't know what else to call it.

With Lindsay Schoolcraft, Gaia Guarda, and now The Inferno Doll, these women are playing metal-ish music on Harps.

Like straight up Harps!

If you don't know, it's time you knew. Check out her great music on BANDCAMP. She just dropped a new EP in October.

But for now, let's find out what High School was like for her....

Sophomore Jinx with NoSelf

NoSelf has taken some time for us again. Check out what life was like in High School for them.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

A: I was incredibly fortunate we had a super tight-knit group of four of us. We actually are all still really close.

2. By this time in my life, I'd given up on all extracurriculars in my school. Tell me about how you spent your afternoons.

A: Trying to figure out how to sing/be in a band, Playing wcw vs nwo: revenge on N64, listening to music with friends.

3. During this time is when I finally discovered Pink Floyd. I had a copy of The Wall on cassette. It was a grey one. That album was my escape. Let's hear about your favorite album from back then. What format was it on?

Sophomore Jinx with Alltar

Let's go out to Portland, Oregon. It's a great city, I presume, and they've got some kick ass music.

Today, we're checking in with Alltar before their new album drops next month.

Wanna preview their brand of doom metal? Good.

Here's some BANDCAMP for ya if you've gotta get those preorders in.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

Sophomore year of high school is a memory stretcher for me.  But what I do know it that I had one close friend who I spent all my time with.  We would do everything together.

Sophomore Jinx with Junior Bruce

If you're into stoner metal on the style of High On Fire, Junior Bruce is a name you really need to know.

They're totally metal and sludgy....all that fuzz.

You can get stuck into their tunes HERE.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

Matty and Shawn were probably my best friends at the time.

Shawn was and still is an amazing artist who would get kids lunch money for drawing Iron Maiden and Metallica logos on notebooks and folders.

Matty drove a firebird and wore snakeskin boots and a Death Angel shirt. He also had this badass jacket with tassels. We started a band together that year.

Sophomore Jinx with Sinful Ways

It's a new year and a new Glacially Musical!

Nah, not even close. Here's the same ridiculous stuff I've been doing for years.

It's time to learn something about some folks hailing from Ottawa, Ontario. I'd make the suggestion that you check out their latest video. It's even right HERE!

1. There is nothing more awkward than the sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

I’ve always kind of been a generally open person and back in high school it let me make friends with a bunch of different people - school from the sports teams to the computer science guys.

My main circle of friends was really diverse and was basically made from people dating each other…you could guess how that ended up.

Sophomore Jinx with Radiant Knife

There are so many times when I'll hear a band say that they can't determine what sort of music they are playing.

More often than not though?

It's a total BS thing because they don't want to try.

I've not heard Radiant Knife say that, but I'll tell you that I can't figure out what kind of music they are and all the times I've tried to describe it, I've totally failed.

The Lafayette, LA duo though, should be in all your earholes. Check it all out on BANDCAMP.

Naturally, because they're such a cool and unique band who've dropped a pair of albums during our pandemic, I asked them about High School.

Sophomore Jinx with Becoming The Lion

Have you ever talked to someone about becoming an Animagus? Well, I'm not 100% certain, but perhaps, Becoming The Lion has.

Check out these Wisconsinite's records over on BANDCAMP.

While you're streaming one of their tracks, find out what life was like in high school!

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

R - My circle of friends was constantly changing from year to year from middle school to high school for one year or another.

Some were expelled from school and some went off to rehab so I guess you could say I had to navigate through social groups a bit to survive for my scholastic years.

Sophomore Jinx with Alpha Boötis

Normally, I'd give you some sort of (attempted) witty reparte about the band doing my latest column, but these fellas do it better than I could.

Check out their BANDCAMP.

Hi! We are Ozymandias and Harakoa, the two voices of synthwave/heavy metal band Alpha Boötis.

We went to school in Montreal, Canada, which has a very different grade system.

Let’s talk about our Secondaire 4, which is the equivalent to sophomore year of American high school.

Sophomore Jinx with Wax Mekanix

You know whom I really loving these days?

God damned Gritty.

He's been the spirit.. you know? So, let's find out more about someone who shares that spirit.

Hailing from Philadelphia, PA we have Waxium Ulysses Mekanix. You should probably get over to BANDCAMP and check out that album.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

I was born and raised in a small central Pennsylvania town.  I was a high school sophomore in 1977.  Honestly, I recall feeling more hopeful and excited for the future than awkward.

Because I had a broad range of interests and activities, my male and female friends were more part of a ven diagram than a circle.

The groups included:

Sophomore Jinx with Gravehuffer

It's time to take a minute and learn about some dude from a small town in the once great State of Missouri.

Gravehuffer hails from Joplin, MO.

(Presently, I'm sitting about four hours east in St. Louis, MO as you surely know by now.)

So, lately on podcasts and what not, I've been saying I'm the guy who brings you the sophomore antics of some death metal guitarists that you didn't know you needed...and here right HERE is why!

But before you get into the tales of brutal awkward years... Gravehuffer has an LP coming out in January on Black Doomba Records. Check it out on BANDCAMP. I think I need to order a copy just out of Show Me State solidarity.

Check it out and get in on it and now, let's get to it.

Sophomore Jinx with Jaime Ayala of Overt Enemy

It's time to introduce you to another metal band out of the ginormo state of Texas. We're talking of course, about Overt Enemy.

Before you move on, I'd suggest you stream their music on BANDCAMP. Their upcoming LP is even going to be getting a sweet, sweet vinyl release. You can even pick black or swirl of doooom.

I know what I'm picking.

While you've now been properly introduced, let's find out how things were back in the proverbial day as the old people say.

Sophomore Jinx with Ghost:Hello

It seems only yesterday that Ghost:Hello dropped their first
vinyl LP. Did you check it out? You should have if you have not.

In the meantime, their friends, Night Goat are getting together with them to release a new Split!

You can get all on top of that stuff HERE.

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

Sophomore year, 2001, whew,  We were a super cliche group of misfits, really.

All of us were discovering our own music to listen it and we’re mostly opposed what each other found, file sharing was huge, Napster, audio galaxy satellite, imesh..

Hot Topic was a thing, so we all had ridiculously huge pants & Slayer shirts.

Honestly, You can probably see a variation of us in any movie that takes place in a school in the early 2000’s.

Sophomore Jinx with Deathless Dogs

As the entirety of the USA thanks Wisconsin, let's talk to a couple of their native sons about what life was like when they were younger.

Today,  have the honor of hearing about High School from Deathless Dogs. Check out their BANDCAMP for more good vibrations.

Well, let's hear it!

1. There is nothing more awkward than sophomore year of high school. Tell me about your circle of friends.

Eddy:  My circle of friends were pretty good kids for the most part. However, there was this one time sophomore year in high school where a group of us drove downtown to the civic center on a Friday night, where a group of people were camped out for an upcoming WWE show.

Sophomore Jinx with Lindsay Schoolcraft

It's a rare day here at Glacially Musical. On a normal day, we're talking to metal guys about tacos and whatnot, but today...

We are talking to a Juno Nominated artist, a musician who's traveled and toured the world over, a woman who's dropped some amazing harp records and sold out her vinyl runs.

It's always an honour (and I'll stick in a superfluous U for her) when she gives my silly self the time of day, much less takes part in in one of my columns.

In case you didn't know, she's dropped her latest album and you can check that out on BANDCAMP.

Sophomore Jinx with Fumarole

Is anyone else there looking back on their halcyon days in High School as we sit huddled in our homes drinking enough coffee to kill a plow horse?

Well, now you know where I'm at.

Today, we're going to learn more about the Aussie doom/stoner band: Fumarole.

What's most important though? They're debut LP is being pressed onto Transparent Green and Black vinyl.

If you need your smoked out doom on wax...

Check out this LINK. Consider me excited.

There's some fun irony here though, our first trip back in time to High School was with someone on the other side of the world. In fact, we share no hemispheres even with these gents.

Well, let's get it on.
