Mexican Thrashers Hellnite are getting ready to hit the road across Western Canada.

Look out Stampeders, here comes Hellnite.

Interestingly enough, Paolo took the band from Mexico City, Mexico and relocated them to Edmonton, AB.

That might be the strangest relocation story I've ever personally heard as a pretend journalist and as a fan. It's not uncommon to move your and somewhere more advantageous careerwise, but this one is a bit of a puzzler to me.

Especially considering the climate. Mexico City is a very clement place to live. It goes from 43 to 86. That's kind of like San Francisco.

But Edmonton is a hellish nightmare of a wintery deathland.

Chapters of an Evil Transition

In the world of tomorrow, Death Metal has cleaned up its act.

Long gone are the drums featuring as much distortion as the guitars. The vocals now have changed into something barely recognizable to those weened on Carcass and Master.

In days gone by, the subgenre was rearing its head out of the muck left in the wake of Thrash.

Death Metal is the unholy second division of metal.

Bands like Morbid Angel, Arch Enemy, and latter day Carcass turned it into something clean. Surgical even.

That's all well and good, but horror, classic horror show...you can see the strings. You know the blood is actually Hershey's Chocolate Syrup... That's when it's time to listen to music that sounds like a two by four to the face feels. Today, Ravenous Death is willing to give us the blow that we all need to take from time to time.

Chapters of an Evil Transition is a dirty thing. The tracks are slimy and it'll be like your first time hearing death metal all over again.

"Daño Colateral" by Centauro

Metal has always been a bit rundown in the vocals department. How many times have you heard people say that they can't understand the words?

Well, Centauro is fun for me because it's in Spanish.

Unlike most Americans, I speak Spanish alongside my English, though English is my mother tongue and Spanish is not.

But I can understand parts of it here and there. There's more to love about this record than simply the language though.

This is an indie thrash record. If you're looking for some Pantera/White Zombie inspired grooves, this isn't it.

Metallica style progressiveness, keep walking. But if you're looking for a record that's going to kick ass six ways till Sunday, these are the droids you're looking for.

And When the Sky Was Opened

Years ago, I was sitting in American Literature 1 with one of my best friends from high school, Lisa.

We were discussing how Morbid Angel was the heaviest god damned band in the world. Then we moved onto how just a few short years ago, Iron Maiden was as heavy as it got.

How in the world could it get heavier than, what we now today as, Tampa Bay Death Metal?

That's one of the things that routinely goes through my head when I'm listening to modern metal, because it is much heavier and much the same as their forebears, but also much different.

Serocs, the multinational death metal collective that recently picked up a Canadian as a full fledged member, is on the cusp of releasing their sophomore album that's lyrically and thematically cohesive.
