Lycanthro |
Well, I'd imagine those Montreal folks might have something to say along with the people who live in TO.
Personally, I'd like to that St. Louis is a pretty sweet place to live as well.
But I'm just filling space here, let's talk about some power metal outta the Capital of Canada.
Lycanthro.
Check them out on Facebook and in the meantime, let's get to know them a little bit better.
1. Is there an event you can point to you that made you say, wow, that's the instrument I want to play? Not like guitar or drums, but the reason why you play the model you do?
Personally, it was when I 1st discovered Megadeth, Dave Mustaine was a big influence on me early on so that's why I play Flying Vs.
Also, I'm a big Les Paul guy and that came from liking Slash when I first started playing the guitar when I was 7 years old. I always wanted a Les Paul since I started playing the guitar and I finally got one recently and it's pretty much been all I've been playing recently!
2. How do you write a song?
For me, songs usually start with a riff and I build around that. I like for example, I'll think "what does this riff remind me of?" and usually, go from there.
Or sometimes I'll have a preconceived idea for what I want a song to be about lyrically and I'll relate that to the riff or whatever musical parts I have written for said song.
3. How many concept records do you own? Could you ever write one?
I love concept records! I love the idea of telling a grandiose story through the context of an album. I own a bunch but I think my favourites are Queensryche "Operation: Mindcrime," "King Diamond "Abigail," Dream Theater "Metropolis PT.2," and there's TONS more I could mention.
In terms of making a concept album that is a personal goal of mine in Lycanthro is to make an epic concept album!
4. Who's influence is most evident in your music? The least?
In terms of Influences we draw from various bands in the US and Euro power metal as well as some bands from thrash metal/ prog metal & heavy metal.
We've been told we sound like bands like Saxon, Primal Fear, Jag Panzer, Helloween, Blind Guardian etc... so well go with that!
5. Which one of your songs is the one your the most proud of?
"Pale Rider" off the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse EP easily. The song is 14 minutes long and I've always been a huge fan of big epics in metal like X Japan "Art of Life" for example.
That song is pretty much a culmination of all of my influences into one song and that song has something for everyone. It was also a huge creative burst for me because it's our longest song and I wrote it in like a week.
It's almost very flattering that people have come up to me at shows and told me that "Pale Rider" is their favourite song from us, which makes me happy because I'm the most proud of it.
6. Sum up your latest record for us.
The upcoming record is a diverse experience. There's something for everyone on there. High vocals, orchestral instruments, heavy chuggy riffs, lots of guitar solos and harmonies and even a breakdown or two!
This record presents all these different diverse concepts in metal in an accessible, diverse and memorable way.
