Video: "The Poisoner" by White Crone

The Poisoner is the debut album from White Crone, a project by successful blues artist Lisa Mann who performs vocals, guitars and bass.

This album is the result of her dream to make a metal record that brings her music craft back to her teen roots of classic metal and doom. These blues influences, her experience in the music industry combined with the great presentation and contributions of talented guests makes for a high quality sound that can easily compete with major releases.

It’s strongly influenced by Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but also would be perfect for fans of modern bands like Smoulder. The bass on this one is incredible and plays a prominent role in the music.

Check out the BANDCAMP.

News: Traveler Announces New Album

Calgary (AB) - Just over a year after the release of their successful debut self-titled album, Canadian true-metal merchants Traveler have returned with the high-voltage long player Termination Shock! The album will be released April 24 on Gates of Hell Records.

The title track is streaming now at youtu.be/S9LFcBE6WrE

The buzz on Calgary’s Traveler reverberated throughout the international metal community in 2019. Their self-titled debut album quickly caught fire upon its release, with fans mesmerized by the band’s patented blend of old-school riffing, rafter-reaching vocals and dueling lead guitars.

Traveler also proved their worth in the live arena, actively playing dates in their native Canada, the United States and also delivering the goods to rapturous European audiences, in particular, a well-received spot on Germany’s Keep It True festival. Realizing that now was the right time to strike for the ever-important album number two, Traveler has returned in 2020 with Termination Shock

Vinyl Review: "Axiom" by Kilter

So.

I'm sitting here at the Group W bench.

Before we dig too deep into this tale, everybody knows how this goes right?

I walked free and I didn't have to join the draft because I couldn't be rehabilitated after being a litter bug.

So, instead we turned to music.

At this point, it's grown so tiresome being the only one talking to me that I've begun talking to ourselves.

It's time to put our keen and penetrating minds on a band from New York or Paris called Kilter. Kilter might just be the greatest off the wall naming of a band that we've ever heard.

At first glance...it's just a shortening of Off Kilter right? Certainly that has to be it, but...

What if it's not?

News: Brain Stem Releases New Lyric Video

Edmonton (AB) - Experimental Death Metal quartet BRAIN STEM have released a lyric video for "Digitally Enshrined," from their upcoming new EP Symptoms of Annihilation - Stage 2. The concept EP serves as the second chapter of a journey that began with of 2018's Symptoms of Annihilation - Stage 1.

EP track "Dawn of Rot" is streaming now!

Symptoms of Annihilation - Stage 2 will be on March 20. Pre-order at BANDCAMP.

Established in 2016, Brain Stem isn't the easiest to define with an exact subgenre. Noted to be groovy at times, but also technical when need be, they've made sure that their sound is not limited by one train of thought, molding metal the way they see fit.

With their second Symptoms of AnnihilationBrain Stem is an outstanding example of what experimental death metal has to offer.

Track List

1. Digitally Enshrined
2. Sol Invictus
3. The Unspoken Ire
4. Dawn of Rot

Album Credits

Recorded, Mixed & Mastered by: Terry Paholek at Physics Lab, Edmonton, Alberta, AB

All lyrics written by: Jessy Leduc, Brain Stem

Stage 2 is not only a lyrical and musical continuation of the Symptoms of Annihilation concept introduced on the Stage 1 EP, but a visual one too.

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow with Pyramids On Mars

Maybe I'm dating myself with this particular column, but really how would it be possible for any self respecting metalhead who loves shredding guitars not be a fan of hair metal if they're being totally honest with themselves?

Well, Pyramids On Mars is going to be honest with us.

Before that though, BANDCAMP!

1. In 1982, we all thought Quiet Riot was metal if you were 7 like I was.

Who was your first Hair Metal band?

I was 7 years old. I sure do remember Quiet Riot when their first album Metal Health came out!

All us boys were into metal only and they brought their LP vinyl albums to school! I would say the very first Hair Metal band I was introduced to was W.A.S.P. Then Quiet Riot.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with The World Without Us

Who else loves pizza out there? You know who loves pizza?

The World Without Us...at least I think they do. I haven't read through this yet, but promise I will!

Either way, you should read this and check out the BANDCAMP.

1. Pizza is the world's most perfect food. This is not up for debate.

Please define pizza as based on your geographical location. When I think of local pizza I think of sawdust. I grew up with a local pizza place known as Imperial Pizza; also know for being the cheapest pizza in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, at the time.

They would use cornmeal on the bottom of their pizzas, which both feels like and resembles sawdust, and your hands, shirt, everything would be covered in sawdust after eating a slice.

Meowtal with Fumarole

Recently, I went to Outback Steakhouse and frankly I have to tell you that the service was less than stellar, the Fosters wasn't cold enough.

Not a single person working in the joint seemed to speak with any sort of Aussie accent. They also couldn't even begin to explain to me what precisely Australian steak even WAS!

Don't get me started on listening to American douchebags saying "shrimp on the barbie."

After this horrific time in my life, I felt I needed to reach out and discuss this with a legitimate Australian.

So, we reached out to our friends, Fumarole. (BANDCAMP) If anyone was going to be able to tell me about their cats and how this relates to poncing French philosophers, they would.

1. In my house, we have three cats named Wickett, Louis IX, and Randall "Pink" Floyd. How many do you have and what are they called?

We have a grey and white boy called Smokey Joe who is chill all the time and a wild Orange stripey boy named Crookshanks.

BONUS Meowtal with Matt 'Blackened' Bacon

If you're anything like me...and the esteemed Matt MF Bacon, you're working hard today.

Because you're killing yourself to live and hustling all the while, knowing you've got a 14 Hour Workday ahead of you...

I'm giving you an audience with the Gary Vee (I don't know who that is) of Black Metal himself.

Matt GOD DAMNED Bacon!!!!

Sacrifice all goats now.

Look, I don't have a link tree for the man...but there's Bacon's Bits, Dropout Media, and The Dumb and Dumbest Podcast.

1. In my house, we have three cats named Wickett, Louis IX, and Randall "Pink" Floyd. How many do you have and what are they called?

I have one his name is James Tiberius Fluffington III.

Review Round Up 2/28/20

Choirs of the Fallen by Wombbath (Soulseller Records) 3/6/20

It's been about five years since Wombbath last hit my ears. Quite a bit has changed on Glacially Musical as well as in Wombbath. There's a new guitarist and a new bassist.

But what hasn't changed is the absolute brutality in which they write.

From top to bottom, Choirs of the Fallen just absolutely thumps it.

Apart from the lineup changes, the biggest change appears to be Wombbath's getting heavier than last time.

In the past, they were more along the Death'n'Roll Vibe, but here, they inhabit the space between Death Metal, Brutal Death Metal, and Deathcore.

It's heavy and devastating. There's very little else one could hope for besides some groove and musicality. Which this album also contains.

News: Paladin Announce Tour Dates

Atlanta based thrashers, PALADIN, have today announced a run of North American dates with Aether Realm for this spring. Kicking off on April 22, the four-piece will be on the road for two weeks, taking in dates in New York, Chicago and Toronto along the way.
Of this tour, the band says "We're excited to announce we have teamed up with our brothers in Aether Realm to bring you the 'Redneck Vikings From Hell North America Tour 2020!' - coming to a venue near you this spring! We can't wait to play for you all especially in a few new cities for us!"
In December band released a three-track tribute to Nevermore titled, Anamnesis which is available to stream everywhere now. The EP follows on from their debut full length, Ascension, which was released last May to widespread critical acclaim. The album made dents in the Billboard charts landing in the Current Hard Rock and Top New Artist album charts at #35 and #40 respectively. PALADIN hit the road with Druids, and later Allegaeon, as well as taking in a bucket list stop at Prog Power USA festival, and the Heavy Metal Beach Party in Miami Florida.

Are You Ready To Rock with Messora

In America, it's easy to forget how there are two Canada's. Plain Canada and French Canada. Honestly, that's really cool.

(NOTE: There's also a French America as well. The Acadians who were expelled from French Canada became the...wait for it... CAJUNS.)

Here in St. Louis, we collectively (read Auguste Chouteau) decided there was more money in English than French.

In Montreal, Messora has dropped their debut album via BANDCAMP. You should probably check that stuff out.

In the meantime, let's talk about the majesty of live records.

1. Every major band worth its salt has released a live album. Tell me about your favorite A list band's live record and your favorite underground live album.

I think maybe my A list band might be too underground and vice versa, but I’d say that Converge’s Jane Live is my favorite A list live recording.

More underground would be Public Castration is a Good Idea by Swans.

News: CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER Announces The Final Chapter In The Southern Lord Reissue Series

Southern Lord will release Home, the final installment in the CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER series, on April 17th. The indelible trio continues to perform live, and CASPAR BRÖTZMANN, arguably one of the most unique and innovative guitarists of the last forty years, is exploring new solo material and will release his first solo album this year 2020.

Originally recorded in 1994 and released in 1995, Home is characterized by MASSAKER's ultra-refined riffs of shrieking, screeching feedback, and rattling machine gun staccatos.

Exuding confidence, authority and a natural rapport that the musicians clearly had with one another. Certain songs from earlier records were revisited on Home including "The Tribe" and "Massaker" from The Tribe, and "Templehof," "Hunter Song," and "Böhmen" from Black Axis

These pieces had evolved following years of rethinking, rehearsing and reshaping them on stage, as well as playing with Danny Lommen, who had replaced Frank Neumeier on drums after Black Axis. These refined versions on Home raise the level of density and tension, the ominous evocations of impending doom, booming threat, and the grim determination that's always driven MASSAKER.

The 1994 recording of Home at the Steinschlag Studio (of FM Einheit) features CASPAR BRÖTZMANN on guitar with Danny Lommen on drums and Eduardo Delgado Lopez on bass.

Home will see release on CD, 2xLP, and digital formats through Southern Lord on April 17th. Stream "Hunter Song" where digital preorders are posted HERE and watch for additional news and physical preorders to post shortly.

Classic Spins with Pyramids On Mars

Guitarist Kevin Estrella’s project Pyramids On Mars released a new album on December 21, 2019, entitled "Edge of the Black."

This third full length from Pyramids On Mars offers up an aural palette of intense instrumental progressive shredding rock that's emotional, provocative and 4-dimensional.

Check out all their stuff via their WEBSITE. Sample their wares on the technological marvel that is YOUTUBE
1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

Following on from the band’s 2018 debut, SALTWATER, this latest offering takes a heavier turn, with more hard-hitting down-tuned riffs, thundering drums and soaring vocals.

Recorded with Producer Tom Hill at Bookhouse Studios in London in 2019, FALTER is the second effort from the Empty Friend, spanning fast-paced hard rock and grunge, to psychedelic blues and sludgy, fuzz-driven stoner rock.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Lexi Layne

Lexi Layne has released her first single, The Darkness of Your Heart.

You should probably check out her YOUTUBE channel for all sorts of versions of the track. Concept, lyric, etc. There's also some other songs as well.

She's one to keep an eye on.

In the meantime, let's talk Pizza.

1. Pizza is the world's most perfect food. This is not up for debate. Please define pizza as based on your geographical location.

-Well, I live in LA so my pizza is very crowded but full of yummy things with great flavor !

2. It's going to get controversial now. Pineapple on Pizza. Why or why not?

-Absolutely NOT I am a true Italian girl from NY originally and that is a big no.

Meowtal with Cam Bird

Yoda (left) and Cam Bird
Australia's Cam Bird will release his new single "The Devil's Hands" on February 21st 2020. The song will be available on streaming formats and can be pre-saved here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cambird/the-devils-hands

Those who knew the Australian from his previous death metal outfit Create|Destroy will be surprised to see such an evolution - after some soul-searching across three EPs, the vocalist/guitarist has finally found his true calling as a hard rockin’ singer/songwriter.

Beyond, released earlier this year, was the final culmination of this shift, and it’s only upwards from there on new single “The Devil’s Hands”.

1. In my house, we have three cats named Wickett, Louis IX, and Randall "Pink" Floyd. How many do you have and what are they called?

I have a cat named Yoda who just turned 1. I only have the one so far and am traditionally a dog person but have fallen in love with the little guy and would love another one later this or next year.

Video: "A Cosmic Owl Ritual" by Strike Master

The last video of the saga, Strike Master delivers 'The Cosmic Owl Ritual' lyric video, the most experimental song of the “Death Based Illusions” Ep.

S+M goes slow and dense with a groovie riff at chorus moment and then releases a mystical melodic passage to make us fly through the thoughts and inspiration that made this song possible, an Owl, A soul in space, a mysterious form, the eyes in the sky watching us move every second and a beloved  spirit that’s no more around with us, don’t forget to feed the flame!!!!

News: Huntsmen Release Second Single and Tour Dates

HUNTSMEN have today released the second track from their upcoming album, Mandala of Fear. The single, titled A Nameless Dread, is streaming everywhere now (listen on Bandcamp here). Mandala of Fear is released via Prosthetic Records on March 13 - pre-orders are available HERE.
Of the new single, guitarist/vocalist, Chris Kang says:
"A Nameless Dread is the heaviest and most abrasive song on Mandala of Fear. It tells of an elusive and shadowy cruelty that marauds the desert seeking only to single out, punish, and destroy the weak and wounded. It might be a man, or a memory of unimaginable pain, or both. Either way it was born of pain and was unable to escape its mire, so pain became its legacy - its gift to others. It is the memory of past terror projected outward into the future, wielding boundless power; eternally repleted by those enslaved to it".

Tour Tales with Secret Shame

Secret Shame, the gothic post punk pre futurists out of Asheville, NC are about to both start a tour and release a new record.

It seems that we are finally doing one of these goofy arsed columns at precisely the right time.

So, let's find out how they do things on the road, and we'll be talking about their new record in a couple weeks.

But, if you're hungry for some new music, check out their BANDCAMP.

1. What's the right length for a tour?

Short enough that you wish you were still on it when you get home. Or long enough so that you’re never home again.

News: Death The Leveller Announces "II" via Cruz Del Sur

Epic, melancholic, and churning doom metal from Ireland! Death The Leveller will release its first full-length album, II, March 13 on Cruz Del Sur Music. A lyric video for the first of four epic tracks, "The Hunt Eternal," is available now at the following location: youtu.be/oSgcfhx1mjg

Death The Leveller's II combines dark, impenetrable doom with the sweeping arrangements of epic metal. There is an air of unassailable melancholy in Irish music.

Its ballads, poetry, traditional music and folk traditions all carry the weight of loss of the men and women who experienced hardship and fought so vigorously for their country. Passed down through generations, it’s only natural for young musicians to have melancholy embedded in their DNA. What they do with it, however, is entirely up to them.

For Death the Leveller, music is the outlet and the common bond between its four members. Therefore, it is no surprise their first full-length album, II, is the perfect union between dark, sweeping epic metal and doom.

News: Ablaze My Sorrow Signs with Black Lion Records

Black Lion Records is pleased to welcome Swedish melo-death act Ablaze My Sorrow into the tribe.

Founded back in 1993, Ablaze My Sorrow has played an immense part in the underground Swedish death metal scene with four albums in their back catalog.

The band is currently in the studio recording their upcoming yet-to-be-titled fifth album, set for release later this year. The upcoming record marks the beginning of tenure for Ablaze My Sorrow's new frontman Jonas Udd.

Black Lion comments, "We are extremely happy about the partnership. I've been a fan of Ablaze My Sorrow since the band's early days, so getting the chance to, now, be a part of the trip is something truly exciting.

Vinyl Review: "Ruins I & IV" by Junkpile Jimmy

Welcome to the show that's surprisingly been renewed yet again.

In the past, I'd talked about when a band sought me out and sent me a CD, but nowadays, I don't listen to CDs anymore, and more often than not I will turn them down.

But, Junkpile Jimmy of Crazytown, CA has again asked to send me a vinyl copy of his album for my review.

There is no more humbling experience and exaltation of what I do here with Glacially Musical than an artist, label, PR, etc sending me a copy of their record on vinyl.

Any time one is sent to me, I'm eternally grateful. My hope against hope is that I receive 2 per month. If I could do 24 vinyl reviews per year, I'd be eternally thrilled.

Here we are in 2020, and this is number four. Only 20 more to go right?

Everybody knows that Edmonton, AB is City of Champions right?

Hemotoxin Announce Their New Album

Bay Area death/thrashers HEMOTOXIN are back with Restructure the Molded Mind.

HEMOTOXIN’s third studio full-length album, and second for Unspeakable Axe Records, finds the band pushing further in every direction—more destructive, more melodic and undeniably catchy.

The power thrash of "Automation" sinks into flesh like a hook, while others are a relentless and ferocious attack on the senses.

The abrasively heavy “Corrupted Flesh” is now streaming at youtu.be/OFptHvtqMVY

With a stew of influences ranging from traditional heavy metal, to progressive metal and the pantheon of death and thrash acts, HEMOTOXIN continue to write the music they want to hear. On Restructure the Molded Mind, HEMOTOXIN showcase a near-total indifference to easily-emulated and trendy sounds.

A Man Walks Into A Bar with The World Without Us

The World Without Us came into existence through the union of two old friends.

After months of trials and tribulation, Chris Fenimore (Lead Guitar) and Mario Canavarro (Vocals) managed to piece together a lineup with guitarist James Sundwall, bassist Peter Baliira, and drummer Steve Campbell. With that, the band was off to the races.

Since their first show in May of 2018 the band has accomplished a shocking amount in a relatively short time.

The group has shared the stage with everyone, from local heavy hitters If Not For Me and Burial in the Sky to big names, including Metal legend Soulfly.

Check out their latest album, Incarnate, on BANDCAMP.

Meowtal with Curtis Dewar of Dewar PR

Sometimes, it's time to start up a new column featuring my whimsical silliness. Today's the day!

We've all seen the hundreds upon thousands of metal guys with their kitty cats. The internet is full of kitties all over the place.

So, because of that, it seems like we should be talking about cats here on Glacially Musical.

Today, we're talking to Curtis Dewar of Dewar PR. If you're looking for metal/hard rock/punk whatever PR, he's your guy.

Let's talk cats now.

1. In my house, we have three cats named Wickett, Louis IX, and Randall "Pink" Floyd. How many do you have and what are they called?

Man, your house must fucking STINK with that many cats!

I have one cat and her name is Ladybug. She's fucking adorable but also a bit of a jerk at times (Like most cats).

Editorial: The State of Music In 2020 Part 1 How Did We Get Here

Recently, Vince Neilstein was on The Dumb and Dumbest Podcast. He was speaking on his article on Metal Sucks about Rock having died.

Check that out HERE.

He said naught wrong in the article and the podcast episode. This inspired me to take a look up out of my bubble and speak on the state of the music industry. This essay is going to take more than one bit to get it over with.

So, let's start with how we got here. Then I'll move onto the ramifications. Finally, I'll finish up with what does all of this mean for Joe Music Fan in 2020?

Well, just how did we get here?

If you ask this question in an online forum or in a room of music fans, you'll hear two answers:

1. Napster.

2. All music sucks nowadays.

These are the easy answers, and yes, the first one has some truth in it, but it's just not that simple.

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow with Third Chamber's Jamie McIsaac

Calgary, Alberta's old school death metal band, Third Chamber has released their debut EP, Harvesting Our Decay.

"Musically the EP is a journey through the history of old school death metal with interludes of more modern death metal aesthetics.

Lyrically the release touches on the problems we see on constant repeat in today's modern plugged-in society."

Check it out on BANDCAMP.

For now, let's talk about Hair metal.

1. In 1982, we all thought Quiet Riot was metal if you were 7 like I was. Who was your first Hair Metal band?

Tour Dates: Iron Kingdom European Tour

Inspired by legendary pillars of heavy metal such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, The Scorpions, and Rush, IRON KINGDOM is well known for their energetic and electrifying stage presence, as well as intricate musical melodies that bring listeners back to a time when the genre was in its prime.

This past October, the band unleashed their latest album "On The Hunt" along with kicking off a two-month North American tour in support of the full-length.

Now recharged after a short break home in Vancouver, BC, the full force DIY Canadian heavy metallers announce they will be crossing the Atlantic for six-show dates in Europe that include performing at Full Metal Osthessen Festival (DE) and Swordbrothers Metal Fest (DE) plus a show date supporting Vicious Rumors (all dates listed below).

Vocalist/guitarist Chris Osterman adds:

“After our last tour of Europe in 2014, we knew that they held heavy metal very close to their hearts, and we knew it was something very special for the genre. Europe was always on our minds, it was always a conversation at rehearsals and band meetings, but for one reason or another, we kept having to delay our return. You know it really is quite strange to think it’s been six whole years since we performed there, We’re so honoured and excited to have been invited back, and we are so thankful to say that now the wait is over, it’s truly been far too long!  We will see you soon!! But until then, just remember to Keep It Steel!”
