Artist Playlist: Transona Five

Transona Five began playing together in 1994 and were most active in the late ‘90s through the early ‘00s.

We were incredibly lucky to be part of the somewhat underground music scene in Denton, Dallas and Fort Worth with bands like Comet, Mazinga Phaser, The Theater Fire, My Friend the Atom, Lift to Experience, Stumptone, Light Bright Highway, The Reds, Cave Dweller, Centromatic, The Baptist Generals, Go Metric USA, Gropius, and other Texans: American Analog Set, Windsor for the Derby, Sixteen Deluxe, Furry Things, You Will Know Us…, Schrasj, Black Lipstick and more.

But even before this we were listening to music that was inspiring us to pick up our own guitars. This is a brief sampling of some of that music.

Expanded Review: "Jupiter Rex" by Finn's Motel

It was May or June in 1994. A major change had just happened again my life. For the third time, I had crossed the Mississippi River on a permanent basis, and thus far the last. Friends of mine had convinced me to attend the Frente! concert at Mississippi Nights.

105.7 The Point was handing out keychains and concert tickets to a free show the next week featuring The Zoo and an indie St. Louis band called The Finns. You have to remember, in 1994, I was more metal than metal.

I had at least 4 death metal records. So, modern rock, as it's known now, was antithetical to me as it wasn't the most extreme metal. So, just being there was risking excommunication from my brotherhood.

That night, I purchased my fourth (I think fourth) wholly independent album, JuCo by the Finns. One has to remember that in 1994, buying indie music wasn't as easy as it is now, or as normal. You almost had to be at a show or one of the few independent record stores.

Vinyl Review: "Reproduction" by Knife In The Water

Today's the day. It's time for Knife In The Water.

Before we get to the music and the normal vinyl trappings, let's talk about this band. They're completely new to me, and what's there to expect rather than some very serious metal?

Let's talk context clues:

1) Knife? I mean hello! We all remember that Cannibal Corpse song don't we?

2) Knives are made of _____? METAL!

3) Aside from dropping your sweet camping knife off the fishing dock into the lake and scaring off the crappie you were trying to ensnare with your glittery jig, there's only one good reason for a knife to be in the water: an act of violence has been committed, nay ULTRA Violence has been committed with this particular stabbing instrument.

LP Review: "Terra Inanis" by Somnium Nox

It seems to me that certain kinds of music, though they may be wholly unrelated have similar criticisms leveled against them by people who do not enjoy those types of music.

How many times have you heard....I just can't get into that music. If I don't know what they're saying, it's not enjoyable to me.

Now, that particular statement has been made to me about both Opera and Death Metal.

Yes, I just compared Opera and Death Metal. Come at me.

In the past, my friends have told me, after my telling them come to this show with me, that if there's no vocals, they're not interested. Wouldn't that critique be distilled to basically the same thing stated above? Because, if one cannot hear what the musician is saying, there's no interest.

Interview: Death of Kings "No filler"

In the Glacially Musical Statistical Headquarters of Greater Metro Atlanta, located near the trash bin in the Avondale Marta Station, Westbound Side, Death of Kings was kind enough to speak to me.

Thankfully, we needed to crunch the numbers that day.

Death of Kings is a heavy thrash band from Atlanta, so the timing all worked out. Over the years, they've changed things up a bit.

They are on the cusp of releasing both their latest 7" EP and debut LP on Boris Records.

Matt Matson- I had previously been in a hardcore punk/metal band called The Despised as well as a rock/punk band called Das Manics.

LP Review: "Arcanum" by Space Witch

The year was circa 1984 and my cousins and I were fighting off our yawns.

It was a very late night for us, but it was Saturday night and what was certain to become our absolute favorite show was coming on at about 12:00am.

To this day, my best recollection of that night was seeing this giant wave of black. It looked like a wrinkly clam shell. It was...well I remember it existing.

The next morning, we discussed this show. My cousins remembered it vividly and told me how great it was, but my memory banks only held a vision of that strange clam shell.

Suffice it to say, the wait, the pushing, and the exhaustion were not worth it to me that evening. So badly did I desire to be a Dr. Who fan. Later I did see full episodes and they did not impress me much.

Well perhaps it seems like this distant past as we all had to endure months of deep sleep space travel in order to make this work.....

What's better than an adventure?

The obvious answer is nothing. There is nothing better than an adventure because, no one knows what's going to happen.

It's sort of like when Peter Griffin chose the mystery box over the boat, because the mystery could be anything, like a boat!

At least two full years of my life have been wasted on digital adventure games from my lowly Atari 2600 to my WiiU.

We are always seeking out the unexpected. Let's reflect on that for just a moment. Humanity seeks to experience the unknown. A surprise is something homo sapiens yearn for. That's part of why this enterprise exists, to go on a musical adventure every single day I'm above the ground.

Recently, the spectacular Grim Van Doom/Cult of Occult split LP came across my desk. It wasn't the first split LP to reach my ears, but it's still such a very rare concept, at least in what I'm getting into both personally and semi-professionally.

If you don't mind, I'm going to take my nerdy bifocals off now. As the hockey game is over, they're no longer necessary.

It's much better now. Sorry, this review has taken a slight turn hasn't it? Well, for this guy, music is a very personal experience.

There was a time when blogs like this, were literal weblogs. I remember when we all poured our lives into our Live Journal or My Space blogs....ah yes.

Frankly, I have no idea what I'm talking about right now. This spring has been one of upheaval in my household. This is not a complaint, but an honest expression of what is happening in my life right now. Now, there is nothing bad going on in my Chateau, but the changes are huge.
