Beam Me Up Scotty with Iron Kingdom

Iron Kingdom
Iron Kingdom?

Well, if that's not the name of a band that's scary, I don't know what is. Certainly, though, it makes me wonder, what's this band all about?

So let me give you the TL:DR version...

They're a Canadian traditional/power/throwback metal band that gives major props and praise to the original Defenders of the Faith and the Tailgunners that took up the leather clad guantlet.

They've got a new disc coming out in October which you can preorder HERE. In the meantime...

Let's to the Starship Enterprise.

Classic Spins with Tel

Tel
From Richmond, VA a self-proclaimed River City, comes a dreamy death metal band called Tel.

Check out their latest record, Lowlife on Bandcamp, but in the meantime, let's talk about some cool records.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album.

The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

Dante: My favorite kind of album is any kind that takes you somewhere unusual, something that feels dreamlike and pulls you into the music for the entirety of the album. Katatonia‘s Brave Murder Day is, without a doubt, my favorite album for this very reason.

Tour Dates: Morbid Angel and Incantation

Legendary death metal titans MORBID ANGEL will blaze US stages this fall on a month-long headlining tour. The 2019 USA Sickness Tour begins November 21st in Houston, Texas and runs through December 21st in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Support will be provided by Swedish black metal practitioners Watain and American death metal veterans Incantation. Ticket go on sale Thursday, August 29th.
Comments MORBID ANGEL's Steve Tucker of the band's latest trek, "We are really stoked to be doing this tour together with our brothers in Watain and Incantation!

This is a relentless lineup of pure evil and uncompromised dark art! We look forward to melting the faces off of all of you seeking the comfort of the dark!"

MORBID ANGEL will be touring in support of their Kingdoms Disdained full-length released in 2017 via Silver Lining Music. The critically-adored record reunites founding guitarist Trey Azagthoth with bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker.

Captured at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and produced by MORBID ANGEL with Erik Rutan, the record delivers eleven pieces of devastatingly dynamic death metal. Rolling Stone hailed a, "cyclone of blastbeat-driven fury punctuated with Azagthoth's signature heaving, lunging grooves and Eddie Van Halen-on-a-bad-trip solos," while Metal Injection crowned the record, "one of the band's most essential efforts," adding, "the record contains almost wall to wall instant classics, and is not only Steve Tucker's best album as MORBID ANGEL frontman, but by extension the group's most genre-defining effort since 1995's iconic Domination."
Orders for Kingdoms Disdained are currently available at THIS LOCATION.

Eastern Cuisine with Heart of Jordan

Heart of Jordan
Because there's nothing like getting to know new music, we're going to spend some time today with Heart of Jordan.

I should mention, that when I say we, I mean you and me....and today is when you're reading this.

Thank you for that.

Heart of Jordan is one of those extreme metal bands that conservatives tend to get up in arms about. It's been out for a little while, but check out their debut on BANDCAMP.

Now, let's talk Asian food!

Hello and welcome to the new style. As always, Glacially Musical is an evolving thing that will continue to grow and change and contract over the years. If you didn't know, we are now on Year 7 of Glacially Musical.

So, standard reviews are now going to be posted roundup style like this. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to between 5 and 10 records per week. But we shall see when it's all said and done.....

Each album will get a paragraph or two, a grade, and links.

Stream: "Animal Kingdom" by Djunah

Glacially Musical is about 98% pure metal, but sometimes it's nice to head out into other genres of music, especially those with a certain kind of heavy to them.

Enter noise rock duo: Djunah.

I'm not certain what Chicago did to them, but there's some serious scarring here. Check out their new single below.

Vinyl Review: "The Difference Engine" by Graham Reynolds

The Difference Engine
During my younger days, Babbage's was the store to go and check out new video games. After all, it was the 90's and specialty shops were only starting to spring up here in Middle America.

Then you couple that with my disdain of corporate shopping being a few years out and it was pre-rise of video games as more than just nerd culture, and we didn't have any local shops that we could look into.

So Babbage's it was.

In later  years, I even spent time doing some seasonal work at Babbage's in South County Center in order to help make ends meet when I was still in retail...and that 25% discount off of video games sure as hell didn't hurt.

Back then I was crazy into games.

You know what no one ever asked me, nor did I ask either, was who in the hell was this Babbage character? I mean, the store was clearly named after him. They certainly didn't work for Nintendo or Sega...or Sony.

Concert Review: Master with Claustrofobia and Dusk 8/16/19

Paul Speckman of Master
It doesn't seem likely that my having a routine when it comes to concerts would make me unique. This one went as many of them do, especially when the intrepid Danny Nichols is in attendance. The big difference tonight was that I drove instead of him.

Danny, myself, and my daughter started our evening at Steve's Hot Dog's Tower Grove East. If you live in St. Louis and don't love this place, I'd ask you to kindly leave.

After dinner, it was time to drop off the kiddo and head down to Fubar. She's been to a few shows, but this didn't seem like the best idea for her first club show.

Upon arrival at Fubar, I did the first thing I needed to get done, I walked over and bought a Master T-shirt. Now, this would seem to be a breach of journalistic ethics, but I already like Master, so if they laid an egg, I'd say so and still proudly wear my new bad ass death metal t-shirt.

Beam Me Up Scotty with Chris West Currently of Lost Orb

Chris West
Check out this BANDCAMP link. Chris West has a new project. From the mind that brought you Crawling for Carrion and Trippy Wicked...just wait till you hear this one.

Chris West is one of those guys who's a modern day heavy metal renaissance man because he's always undergoing some sort of reawakening and reinvention.

Check out  his latest crazy idea at that link, but...

In the meantime, phasers set to stun.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Blind Scryer

Blind Scryer
If you're ever in Kansas City and you wanna hear some good music...
Do you remember that particular bit of wit from the greatest movie about Heavy Metal of All Time?

Well, if you're in Louisville and not KC and you're looking for some stoner metal and not jazz, you might just wanna check out Blind Scryer.

They popped out an album this past March, check it on
BANDCAMP and in the mean time, let's talk pizza.
1. Pizza is the world's most perfect food. This is not up for debate. Please define pizza as based on your geographical location.
A lot of places in Louisville, new and old have/had a blend of styles going on. Generous dough base, large size (think New York style but not quite as large), red sauce, standard supreme toppings (but large pieces) piled high, covered in cheese.

Gramma Vedetta release video for "Hang Up My Boots"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GRAMMA VEDETTA RELEASE VIDEO FOR "HANG UP MY BOOTS"

UK rockers GRAMMA VEDETTA have just released a video for their new track "Hang Up My Boots". The video was recorded live in the studio.

The band commented "We’d released singles, a full EP, a lyric video, and some live shows filmed with mobile phones from friends, but never a close up of the band sweating in a room full of amps — plus we wanted to put out a song that we’ve been playing live for over a year.  We decided to catch two birds with a stone.  Here it is: “Hang Up My Boots,” a heavy rock song about an aged musician ranting about being old and surrounded by young musicians that are just instagram posers."

Beam Me Up Scotty with Dropout Media's Matt Bacon

Matt Bacon
Beam me up, Scotty. This planet sucks!

My mother wore a shirt emblazoned with the bastardization of the classic Star Trek: The Original Series phrase: Scotty, beam us up.

This was my personal introduction into the world of tomorrow: Star Trek.

A Wagon Train To The Stars created by Gene Roddenberry handed off to Piller and Berman, and I don't know who's running the joint now.

Simon Pegg is doing some writing though, but maybe he's just a clerk. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time we ever thought of something as not just a universe, but a multiverse.

Even in The Original Series, they were headed into parallel universes. Now there's even two damned timelines and I can't keep up.

Now, we're going to talk to Metal's handsomest boy, Matt Bacon. He's so many things that it's really hard to figure out exactly what he is and what he does.

But he can help you. Be sure to check out his podcast, Dumb & Dumbest, but only if you're either in a band who's trying to make it, or if you like witty word play.

Now...set phasers to awesome.

News: John 5 Announces Invasion Second Leg

JOHN 5 and the Creatures have announced the second leg of the Invasion Tour 2019. The tour will kick off on October 30 in Michigan and wrap up just before Thanksgiving.
Jared James Nichols, who supported JOHN 5 on the first leg of the Invasion Tour earlier this year, has once again been tapped to open along with additional support from Reverend Jack.
"I'm excited to get back out on the road with The Creatures and play music from the new album," JOHN 5 says. "The response to the first leg of the Invasion Tour earlier this year was amazing and I can't wait to hit even more cities. Jared James Nichols was phenomenal last time around and we are happy to have him join us again."
Released last week, JOHN 5's highly-anticipated Invasion album has received rave reviews all around. Fans were able to get a taste of the album throughout the first half of the year via a series of videos released each month.

JOHN 5 kicked off the year with the debut video clip from Invasion, the campy animated "Zoinks!", followed by three equally eccentric videos for "Midnight Mass," "I Am John 5" and "Crank It - Living with Ghosts."

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Christian Ayala of Avandra

Let's take Pizza Pie Do or Die into the Caribbian Sea.

Avandra is riding high on their latest record, Descender, which you can pick up via Blood Music on BANDCAMP.

In the mean time, let's find out what pizza is like in Puerto Rico.

1. Pizza is the world's most perfect food. This is not up for debate.

Please define pizza as based on your geographical location.

Pizza in Puerto Rico is actually pretty damn good.

Best pizza I have ever tried anywhere is from an Argentinean pizzeria in Isla Verse, an area in Puerto Rico, called Ferrari’s.

And when I say “anywhere” I mean New York (was partly raised there) and Philly and so on. There are also restaurants, like Tony’s Pizza in a town called Arecibo, that does this great tasting corned beef pizza.

LP Review: "The Call of the Void" by Anticosm

The Call of the Void
Certainly others aside from myself have come in contact with sub-sub-genre names like Death and Roll, Black Thrash, or what about...

Black Thrash'n'Roll.

My brain responds back..this isn't a thing. Not only does it lack existence, but these three ideas cannot possibly exist in the same space.

Well, New Jersey's Anticosm is tagged with this unwieldy label.

Going back,  yes, these three musical ideas are mutually exclusive.

Anticosm is sort of like the He-Man Villain, Man-E-Faces, except three isn't many, but just three.

The styles come in and go out. Not to say they're interchangeable, but it's not all three things at one time. It's going to be the mixing of styles that creates new music. That's what created the golden age of music.

Anticosm has simply done what bands like Led Zeppelin have done before them. Except they added in a bit of elevator music which is really kvlt right?

By being at expert level in their three main killing styles, they've enabled themselves to make blistering record that can be heavy without exhausting the listener.

Anyway, their new record is coming out soon. Don't pass.

Classic Spins with Tides of Sulfur

Tides of Sulfur
Whenever Monty Python members, apart from Terry Jones, are asked to describe the Terry Jones, they always start off the same way.

He's Welsh.

Well, what in the world does that mean? I don't think I'm speaking out of turn here across the pond when I say that Americans, by and large, don't think of Wales as something apart from England. Hell, most of us barely understand that Scotland is something different.

Roger Waters also sang about Wales...the blood red dragon on the field of green.

Incidentally, there's a Welsh flag on my street. Maybe I'll head over there with my copy of Radio KAOS one of these days and a sixer of beer....see if we can be friends.

While I'm steeling myself for this uninvited excursion, let's all get down with Welsh sludgers, Tides of Sulfur.

Get thee over to BANDCAMP for a copy of their latest record via Sludgelord Records.

You can even get it as a record!

Video: "Wrapped In Laments" by Malacoda

I'm going to let Malacoda's vocalist Lucas Di Mascio explains the track:

"Full of melancholic lead melodies over a frantic, almost djent sounding guitar riff, topped off with a dissonant drawn-out scream, the song sounds eerie, angry and sad all at once. It was inspired by the "Lying Figure" monsters from the Silent Hill 2 video game. They are female creatures that are trapped in a straight jacket of their own skin. They have holes in their chest where their hearts should be and they spew acid if the main character gets too close. They are beautifully haunting and evoke pity and disgust. They represent how the main character's wife felt while dying of melanoma, she felt she was a monster- too hideous to love and trapped in her own skin. I always took the acid-spewing from the chest as symbolic to how she was very verbally abusive to the main character in her final days and said things that while hurtful, came from the heart. The chorus brings up the words "lie about" as a common phrase, and it's both referencing how the main character would lie to her about his infidelity, but also how she felt all she could do was physically lie in a bed and waste away."

I'll tell you to get to BANDCAMP,

Vinyl Review: "There Is No Feeling Better" by Mike Adams At His Honest Weight

There Is No Feeling Better
There are things that happen to you in the world that you remember. Such happenings can be so profound that for years you tell your friends where you were when it happened.

For me, it was a Friday evening. Bruce Franks has hours away from winning his election to the Missouri Legislature.

The rain was pouring and I was dragging my wife to Foam on Cherokee St. in South St. Louis, MO.

We were going to be seeing Mike Adams At His Honest Weight.

No one begged me to be there. There was no outcry for me to spill my words upon the pages about this show.

In fact, this wasn't the first time I'd heard Mike Adams At His Honest Weight. So, like my personal mass on my driver's license...the above kind of fraudulent. There was nothing about the show that was my first, apart from the first time seeing them live.

Classic Spins with Ritchie Randall of Gravehuffer

Gravehuffer
In the Southwestern corner of the State of Missouri, you'll find a little city called Joplin, MO. Pop: 52,288.

It's about four hours away from where I sit right now, well add an extra 20 minutes as it'll take me a moment to get down to Interstate 44.

I'm reasonably certain there's something about Joplin that's famous, but I can't seem to remember what it is right now.

Perhaps Gravehuffer, a local Doom Metal band, will be what puts Joplin on the map outside of the Show Me State.

Don't forget to hit them up over at BANDCAMP. Now, let's find out what they're listening to.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?
