Review Round Up For 8/23/19

Hello and welcome to the new style. As always, Glacially Musical is an evolving thing that will continue to grow and change and contract over the years. If you didn't know, we are now on Year 7 of Glacially Musical.

So, standard reviews are now going to be posted roundup style like this. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to between 5 and 10 records per week. But we shall see when it's all said and done.....

Each album will get a paragraph or two, a grade, and links.

Lucid by Anamorph 9/6/19

Hailing from North Carolina, we have the latest from Anamorph. Lucid is their first record since 2015's Orbis. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you what that album was like as I haven't hear it. So, where they are now compared to where they were then...I dunno.

What I do know is that on this XLP, they've found a sweet spot between the over the top tapping/shredding of Felix Martin and the heaviness of Animals As Leaders.

Through the disc, they wove in and out of moods. It's uncommon for an instrumental prog metal band to evoke genuine emotions.

Alternate Endings by Cranial 9/27/19

Sludgelord Records is another label that's built up cache in my world and Cranial with this brilliant record has done the very same thing.

It should be surprising to precisely no one that epic doom metal always gets a notice from me. When you couple that with your record only having four tracks and it being a full length LP, i.e. being a full 1.75 Reign In Bloods...now you've got my full attention and my personal spider sense is probably tingling.

What's really hard is taking these kinds of tunes and keeping them interesting. It must be considered that most people listen to their music via MP3 typically on their phones. If you  hear a tune on shuffle and it's 15 minutes or longer, it's got to hold your attention.

In a world that makes Short Attention Span Theater seem like Epic Poetry, Cranial is able to keep their tracks interesting and heavy.

Diseased by Bones 9/20/19

When you're looking for a great palette cleanser, few kinds of music can crush you in the kidneys like brutal death metal.

And if that's not brutal enough, head over into grindcore and that'll clear everything out like pickled ginger.Well, Bones has settled into the area between Grindcore, Death Metal, and Crust. At least, they tell me that last one, I'm still not sure I know what it means.

Their sound also varies between traditional and modern. If there was ever a such thing as Doomed Death Metal, this might be it? The standard conventions are all there. The thunder and the bluster, and then there's more.

That's what puts Diseased into the top tier for me. They're a lot like many of the bands we've all heard over the years, but then they find something that none of us have heard in this style of music.

Heavy, fast, and interesting.

Pulse by Algebra 9/30/19

Unspeakable Axe records was good enough to bring Algebra back into the equation. It's been nearly five years since Feed The Ego crushed our ear drums and souls.

The only complaint about that album was a lack of a tour stop in St. Louis.

Now, they're back and just as metal as ever, if not even more so! It has been awhile since I listened to that album. When I don't have a vinyl copy of something, I don't listen to it much as a full on listen, and even less when it's digital only.

But praise be to they who have written such impossible tracks. The vocals are harsh, harsh, harsh. Often times they have the lacerating qualities of a cat o nine tails. But the guitars don't take a back seat. That perfect metal tone. Grating...but intoxicating.

If you're looking for some over the top thrash, Algebra has you covered.

Dawn of Infinite Fire by Asagraum 9/13/19

In a world where metal is largely dudes, it's nice to have something a little bit different. This time that difference is in the women who people up Asagraum.

What makes this album great to me is that had it not been mentioned that the witches are back, it would never have occurred to me that this isn't just trve kvlt blvck mvtal.

This is the kind of black metal that rips the rotting flesh off the corpses. It's thundering and relentless, just like extreme metal should be.

Dawn of Infinite fire is the kind of record that'll bring new fans into the fold, and keep the elders interested.
