Hometown Tales with DayGlo Mourning's Joe Mills

DayGlo Mourning
DayGlo Mourning is on the post-release afterglow.

It might even be glowing during the standard diurnal hours when that sort of thing isn't precisely expected. The Mourning crew teamed up with Bludy Gyers for a spectacular sludge split, Rope Enough For Two. Check that out on the BANDCAMP.

There's even a vinyl edition hitting the mailbox around..well actually right now.

Joe Mills was good enough to tell us about Atlanta from his perspective.

Check it out.

1. St. Louis City is my hometown. I've lived here for most of my life in and around the city. Where are you from?

I'm originally from WV, but after a lot of travel I've settled in Atlanta, GA.

2.We have three things that don't really exist anywhere else: the slinger, the gooey butter cake, and toasted ravioli. Tell me about your hometown delicacy.

BBQ is definitely king in the south.  Atlanta is particularly great for BBQ because of all the different influences we have.

3. In St. Louis, though there have been others. Our biggest hometown team is the St. Louis Cardinals (formerly the St. Louis Perfectos, nee: the St. Louis Browns, not the AL team that moved to Baltimore.) There is nowhere you can go to escape it. I'm a hockey fan, not a baseball fan, so it's a bit weird to me. Tell me about your hometown's big team.

Right now the Atlanta United is the hot ticket to be honest.  But with collage football starting back up the UGA Bulldogs will rule the roost.

4. St. Louis isn't really known for any one type of music scene. The biggest acts I can think of to get out of here alive were Gravity Kills, Nelly and the St. Lunatics, and Sheryl Crow. There's always been a vibrant concert scene though. What about where you are?

There has always been good music coming out of this area be it Blues, R&B, Rap, Alternative or Metal.

The more underground Doom Metal scene is alive and well for sure.

5. 20 years ago, St. Louis had about 300 murders each year, floods, and all sorts of other fun things. You might have heard about us being named the Murder Capital of the USA. Nowadays, a lot here is 150. But there are lots of parts of the city that are returning to former glory. On the whole, St. Louis is a better place to live today than before. Is there any thing like that where you're from?

There are certainly areas in Atlanta that you may want to avoid in certain situations.  But honestly this is something I rarely think about in my comings and goings because I'm focused on enjoying what the city has to offer.

As you would expect growing up West Virginia was a different experience entirely.

6. Are you still there?

I left WV when I was 17 to travel the world.  Several years later I made a new home in Atlanta.
