Bookin' It with Space Coke

Space Coke
Let's get back to getting energetic in the universe!

It seems only right that my first work back after being sick in bed is something on Space Coke.

They're a doom metal band who had the audacity to put a dead knight on the cover of their album. I mean, this is a band that doesn't have any problem being right on the nose..

Or going up it...am I right?

Well, their last record, L'appel Du Vide was a piece of absolute brilliance. You should get on that over at BANDCAMP.

But for now, it's all about books.

1. I try to read at least two books per month, and mostly fail, what's your goal and reality

I have been trying to revive my reading over the tsunami of streaming video that cuts into it way too much. Reading definitely is better for keeping the creative mind vibrant.

Switching between reading one book all night until it's finished or having five bookmarked and slowly reading all at once is normal for me. I shoot for a minumum of one a week.

2. Encyclopedia Brown and Choose Your Own Adventure books were a big part of my childhood. What did you read back in Elementary School?

I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by literary types my entire life so I read adult literature in elementary school as much as children's lit. A few standouts for me (and I still revisit them) are: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

My copy had a metallic chrome cover. Between that and the amazing Jules Fieffer illustrations it really was dear to me. Every parent should give this book to their children. The Curse of the Blue Figurine by John Bellairs. This was the first in the Johnny Dixon series but was always my favorite.

The illustrations by Edward Gorey really made it extra spooky. As you can see the mix of writing and artwork were special to me at a younger age.

3. It's no secret that I think Harry Potter is an amazing saga, but it wasn't until after the movie for Chamber of Secrets was released that I began reading the books. What was the big thing you were late on?

This is hard for me to answer as I haven't ever really read current hits. Most of what I consider great was written before my birth.

4. My local library is amazing and I'm there pretty frequently. What do you like about your library?

The main city library in Columbia, SC is truly amazing. It has been recently renovated and now has creator's spaces with things like a digital video editing suite and music composition courses, all for free!

Also they recently had Bootsy Collins come do an amazing, historical interview and I got to meet him, for free! In grade school I followed Frank Zappa's advice to leave school, go to a library and educate yourself.

5. Comic Books. Which ones are you reading?

Currently Boogeyman by Sergio Aragones. Great illustration of the motivation of fear.

6. What author can you just read again and again?

One of my all time favorite books is Journey to the End of the the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine. I have read it many times.

A couple of other frequently revisited books are Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco and Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I generally reread particular books rather than an author.
