Classic Spins with James Brookes of Evertrapped

Evertrapped (Frederick Blanchette)
If you don't mind me talking about myself  a bit before getting into it....

If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen, but personally I've been going through quite a lot lately.

Hopefully you're all surviving the quarantine and making it through.

So, without further adieu, let's talk about Evertrapped.

The Montreal based melodic death metal quintet's singer, James Brookes took some time to give us his classic spins.

This one is really, really cool because we see a different side of a death metal singer.

While you're thinking about it, check out their upcoming album, The Last Extinction.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

Most of the later Smashing Pumpkins before they broke up (the first time?) and Marilyn Manson's early work.

I suppose if I had to pick one it would have to be Antichrist Superstar. Simply, without it I may have never been a front man in a metal band.

2. My very first album was Live Evil by Black Sabbath. Since then I've had a strong affinity for the live record, even if they're a bit fake. KISS set the bar with Alive!. Surely, it was fake, but it's got the best concert feel of anyone.

Tell me about your favorite live record?

My favorite to this day was the first live album I ever got which was Live On Two Legs by Pearl Jam.

I had never seen them live at that point and I was a huge fan of their music so it was such an amazing experience to hear their songs in such a different way.

3. There are a great number of records I've turned to for my moods. What do you listen to when you're angry? Sad?

When I'm sad it once again will usually come back to the Smashing Pumpkins.

It has such nostalgia for me so when that gets mixed up into it Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie will always hit home for me.

And when I'm angry well frankly there are too many albums to name but I can say that the most recent addition would be the latest As I Lay Dying album Shaped By Fire.

4. One of my friends laughs at me, routinely, for loving the Misfit Toys of albums by major bands. Lulu by Metallica and Lou Reed, Carnival of Souls by Kiss, Diabolous En Musica by Slayer, etc.

What's the strange one that you love?

Since I like so much stuff that doesn't sound anything like our band, I suppose for me it's just normal but some of the furthest from it would probably Kid A and Amnesiac by Radiohead.

I loved it since high school and I still dig it today.

5. It's almost fashionable to release live versions of albums or re-record the old ones. King Diamond is releasing a concert with Abigail front to back. Roger Waters has done The Wall twice.

Which ones do you have in your collection?

Honestly, I don't really have any, to be honest.

The only thing I can think of is if a band re-masters an album, so for example, Lamb Of God remastered As The Palaces Burn and it was great.

In fact, we have recently re-mastered our 2012 album The Anomaly and 2015 album Under The Deep and released them as free downloads.
