Classic Spins with Kris from Prison

Prison
Think about all the great music that's come out Seattle, WA. The Pacific Northwest has been a breeding ground for some truly revolutionary artists.

Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Mudhoney.

There have been several artists that have ticked off my personal boxes lately as well. Un, Into The Storm, and Breag Naofa.

It's interesting not that how many acts  have made it out of the Sea-Tac Strip (if that's a thing) and into the wider United States, but how vastly different the scenes are up there.

It must have something to do with it raining all the time. I'm looking at you, The Crow.

Today we're getting to meet a new act from the Pee En Dubs: Prison.

You should be checking out their new EP, Annihilation. It's guaranteed to be nothing like you've ever heard before. It's got all the bravado of youth and the anger of those left behind.

For now though, let's talk about music.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me.

What's your favorite one and why?

This is Kris.  I play drums and do backing vox in Prison.

My favorite concept album is definitely Monuments to Thieves by His Hero Is Gone.  No one weaves a long form musical tapestry like His Hero.

2. My very first album was Live Evil b Black Sabbath. Since then I've had a strong affinity for the live record, even if they're a bit fake. KISS set the bar with Alive!. Surely, it was fake, but it's got the best concert feel of any one.

Tell me about your favorite live record?

Best live record of all time: Fifteen Counts of Arson by His Hero Is Gone.  So much live non-fake energy and live performance concert feel, man!

3. There are a great number of records I've turned to for my moods. What do you listen to when you're angry? Sad?

Those are definitely my two discernible moods as well.  Lately, when I'm angry, I've been digging into Cult Leader a lot.

I'm also down with Fange, LLNN, Infernal Coil, Miscarriage and the new Minors record..

When I'm sad, I'm gonna grind it out with something crushing like Primitive Man or Body Void or Thou or The Body.

Or I'll just wallow in something more melancholy like the new Emma Ruth Rundle record.

4. One of my friends laughs at me, routinely, for loving the Misfit Toys of albums by major bands. Lulu by Metallica and Lou Reed, Carnival of Souls by Kiss, Diabolous En Musica by Slayer, etc.
What's the strange one that you love?

I don't know how strange it is, but I legitimately love old Dwight Yoakam.  His first three records are all classics.

Go listen to those records.
.
5. It's almost fashionable to release live versions of albums or re-record the old ones. King Diamond is releasing a concert with Abigail front to back. Roger Waters has done The Wall twice.

Which ones do you have in your collection?

I've got a couple of Kiss's Alive records.  I've got The Stones' Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out.  Sunn o)))'s Domkirke is really good, and I've probably got a bunch of other shit from older bands and songwriters.

If I'm honest, I'd have to say I prefer seeing an actual live music performance than listening to a recording of a live show.

Call me crazy.

Thanks!  Check out my band's new EP, "Come, Annihilation." on Bandcamp and Spotify and Apple Music and YouTube and all that other shit.  Then come see us play live!
