Classic Spins with Sionis's Lee Stanhope

Things I'll never tire of include finding out more about the metal scene from our friends to the north, America's Hat, The Great White North, the home of hockey, Canada.

Growing up in America, we're taught that an American's birthright is to be a part of the people who are the center of the entire world for all of its inhabitants.

Our sports, our literature, our films, and yes, our music is popular everywhere.

So, today we have a band from Edmonton, AB, Sionis, telling us about the music that got their motors running when they were younger.

How much of it is American?

Let's find out and check out their new video on YOUTUBE.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

My favourite concept album is Crime of the Century by Supertramp. My dad raised me on classic rock and early metal, and this album always painted such an interesting and thought-provoking image in my mind, which now reminds me of him.

You have to listen to this one front-to-back to really appreciate it.

 2. My very first album was Live Evil by Black Sabbath. Since then I've had a strong affinity for the live record, even if they're a bit fake. KISS set the bar with Alive!. Surely, it was fake, but it's got the best concert feel of any one.

Tell me about your favorite live record?

My favourite live record is Pink Floyd’s Pulse.

While it, unfortunately, didn’t have Roger Waters on the stage, this album inspired me greatly as a guitarist. I was hypnotized by David Gilmour’s emotional and nuanced playing.

3. There are a great number of records I've turned to for my moods. What do you listen to when you're angry? Sad?

When I’m angry I usually put on something like Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, or Thy Art Is Murder, and when I am sad I pretty much go to Black by Pearl Jam.

That song hits me so hard, even after all these years.

Note from Terence: When I am angry I listen to heavy music like Parkway Drive and The Ghost Inside. When I am sad, I listen to The Spill Canvas, Saywecanfly, Dashboard Confessional, and Taking Back Sunday.

4. One of my friends laughs at me, routinely, for loving the Misfit Toys of albums by major bands. Lulu by Metallica and Lou Reed, Carnival of Souls by Kiss, Diabolous En Musica by Slayer, etc.

What's the strange one that you love?

I love Binaural by Pearl Jam. Many fans turn their noses up at it for being different, and losing their producer, Brendan O’Brian, didn’t help things.

Despite that, I loved the atmosphere, and as a gear junky, I loved that they used binaural recording techniques.

Additionally, this was the first album that Matt Cameron played on, and he rocks!

5. It's almost fashionable to release live versions of albums or re-record the old ones. King Diamond is releasing a concert with Abigail front to back. Roger Waters has done The Wall twice. Which ones do you have in your collection?

I honestly don’t have many live albums or have had any, but I can tell you that some major stand out live album performances to me are the Neverender collection by Coheed & Cambria.

Learning all of their albums front-to-back to date at the time and playing them in back-to-back shows almost flawlessly was quite the feat, and highly respectable.
