Pandemic Dispatches with Oscar Souto of Anonymus

Let's check in with Anonymus. As their website is in French, I choose to believe that they are from the Northern Most reaches of PQ.

Now, if you want to be confused, their new record is in Spanish. I dunno. This is some David Lee Roth stuff right here.

Check our their video and read on to see how they're riding this all out.

1. How are things going where you are? The laws and such.

Well, I think we all live the same thing in the music business. Concerts and tours have been cancelled for everyone all around the world so it’s hard for every musician, promoter, and everybody working in the show business.

Right now it’s impossible to play a live gig unless you do it in an empty place with cameras broadcasting live on the internet. We are thinking about doing it for our fans, but, I don’t know, for me, it’s kind of bizarre.

No crowd in front of us, acting like we are in a regular concert feels weird but if it’s the only solution, will do it! But right now politicians are saying that maybe they will open theatres before June 24.

Ok, but how will it be? 100 people in a place that can fit 600? Who knows!

2. How long have you been sheltering in place at this time?

Everything started around the middle of march, so around 3 months already. It wasn’t easy at the beginning….the end of the winter, darkness and you feel like you are in prison even though you’re at home.

Now it’s a bit easier because the good weather is coming along but still, you feel trapped in your own shelf! And honestly, I think people are getting really impatient about it, and we see all kinds of complications between citizens of the same neighbourhood.

3. What has been cancelled on you that you were looking forward to?

Well actually we had a couple of concerts booked, but now it’s a thing of the past. Maybe they will be re-scheduled but we don’t know yet.

Our plans for the beginning of 2020 was to put out our all Spanish album for South America. We had vinyl and CD coming but we put a stop to it.

But still, we promote the album anyway and it’s going to be out on the internet thought Spotify, iTunes and the social media.

We just put on hold everything that was physical but you know, maybe the time will be right in a couple of months to do things as we thought in the beginning.

4. How have you been passing the time indoors?

Honestly pretty hard for me. I’m talking for myself here and not the rest of the band. I need to work hard and be an active worker, and I need to socialize a bit even though I am a solitary person to get inspired to write music.

And it was not the perfect situation for that. I locked myself up, as they asked us to do, to kill this disease, but really not an inspiring situation for me. I keep on trying but nothing good came out.

The blank sheet so to speak.

5. Loads of artists have been talking about how they're being creative. When the lockdown is over are ya gonna be ready to hit up the studio?

I don’t think so……we have worked so hard on “La Bestia” and we have to do things halfway through all that we had planned, that we had to move fast and keep things going.

So instead of working on new material, we worked on the things that we planned to put out. And it’s going to come out one way or the other!

6. What crazy projects have you been considering since you've been in quarantine?

We did some masks to protect people from the Coronavirus with full Anonymus design on it. They are pretty cool and we sold a lot of them.

Beyond that, we still had the chance to practice and keep things going. And we did everything without harming each other. Everyone was playing in his little booth, without seeing each other and we rock the place!
