Hometown Tales with Crucible of Hate

Crucible of Hate
This past September, Crucible of Hate released their latest disc, Dark Metamorphosis. You can get that on BANDCAMP.

They're an extreme metal band from Lancaster, Ohio.

Let's find out more what life is like out there. In the meantime, you can always get at them on FACEBOOK

1. St. Louis City is my hometown. I've lived here for most of my life in and around the city.

Where are you from?

Central Ohio. I was born in Lancaster, Ohio, grew up in a tiny little town which was not even big enough for a traffic light (Tarlton), and have lived in this area my entire life.

2.We have three things that don't really exist anywhere else: the slinger, the gooey butter cake, and toasted ravioli.
Tell me about your hometown delicacy.

I am very familiar with the St Louis cuisine – I used to come there for a couple days every month for about 10 years for my old job.

I love the toasted ravioli!  Here in central Ohio (specifically Columbus) we are the home to White Castle and Wendy’s, we have a lot of great “tavern style” pizza, but I am not aware of anything Columbus or Central-Ohio specialty.

3. In St. Louis, though there have been others. Our biggest hometown team is the St. Louis Cardinals (formerly the St. Louis Perfectos, nee: the St. Louis Browns, not the AL team that moved to Baltimore.) There is nowhere you can go to escape it.

I'm a hockey fan, not a baseball fan, so it's a bit weird to me. Tell me about your hometown's big team.

Well, Columbus has a couple of teams worth noting. The Blue Jackets (NHL) have a pretty strong following here and have been playing pretty solid hockey for the last couple of seasons.

We appear to be on the cusp of losing our MLS team (The Columbus Crew) to Austin TX.  However, nothing even comes remotely close to the following of THE Ohio State University Football program.

People are insanely devoted to them. Even in the face of scandal/controversy such as the current Urban Meyer suspension for one of his assistant coach’s alleged Domestic Violence / Uncontrolled Behavior.

I follow and root for them, but I am not a full-fledged BuckNut.

4. St. Louis isn't really known for any one type of music scene. The biggest acts I can think of to get out of here alive were Gravity Kills, Nelly and the St. Lunatics, and Sheryl Crow. There's always been a vibrant concert scene though.

What about where you are?

Well, with OSU being one of the largest Universities in the US (and perhaps the world?) we have a very diverse music scene.

There are plenty of college / alt bands, some “mainstream” metal bands (‘Beartooth’, ‘Starset’), the old school heavy metal band ‘The Godz’, and Columbus has also produced some big country acts – ‘Rascal Flatts’ and ‘McGuffy Lane.'

Obviously we don’t fall into any of the above categories, but Columbus does have a tight (and excellent) extreme metal community with a ton of talented musicians.

As far as concerts, sadly, Columbus tends to get skipped by many of the metal tours in favor of Cincinnati and Cleveland.

5. 20 years ago, St. Louis had about 300 murders each year, floods, and all sorts of other fun things. You might have heard about us being named the Murder Capital of the USA. Nowadays, a lot here is 150. But there are lots of parts of the city that are returning to former glory.

On the whole, St. Louis is a better place to live today than before. Is there anything like that where you're from?

Nah, we don’t have anything like that, but Chillicothe (a town about an hour south of Columbus) has been making headlines over the last couple of years for women going missing.

Columbus did have a highway shooter about 8 or 10 years ago – that was a pretty scary time to have to drive to from work every day.

6. Are you still there?

I do still live in the Lancaster area, it is and likely always will be “home” for me.
