Vinyl Review: "No Way Out" by Sulfur City

How long has it been since Sulfur City has been on our collective radars?

Frankly, it's been too long. their album, Talking Loud, was something of a revelation to me. It was dirty blues with southern rock accents.

It was equal parts Yardbirds, Eric Clapton, Emmit's Jug Band, with a garnish of Jimi Hendrix.

How many electric washboards had you heard?

I was shocked to see how well they worked in there with psychedelic guitars.

It wouldn't be quite appropriate to say they became my favorite band, by my then three year old daughter sure did love their tracks.

Interview: Lori Paradis of Sulfur City

Recently, I became acutely aware of Sulfur City. They are presently riding the wave of their debut record being released on Alive-Natural Sound.

There were a lot of things I really liked about this band, but what struck me was something a bit different than just it's the first female fronted band on the label...check it out!

Glacially Musical: Thank you for taking a little time for me today.

Lori Paradis: My pleasure, Nik.

GM: There are a few very obvious influences, but who influenced or inspired you that would surprise us?

LP: Nina Simone is very inspirational to me and everything about her floors me. Also Ani DiFranco because she’s not afraid to speak her mind and her music is amazing.

Another influence is Ben Harper for the way he experiments in different styles of music and the way he lets go emotionally in a song.

Album Review: "Talking Loud" by Sulfur City

Talking Loud
This blog is a monument to all the great music being released in the modern era and a memorial to all the amazing music that we just don't have the time to review.

My personal journey back into the world of modern music took place in 2008. Until that point, old music was the only thing that played in my car, house, etc.

At the Schlafly Tap Room, there was a Camel Cigarettes show that featured somebody, The Black Diamond Heavies, and Exene Cervanka & The Original Sinners.

You may recall my many posts on James Leg...

A few fairly important things happened that night, though it hadn't occurred to your friend and humble narrator yet. My mind was now open to new music. The Blues bug had bitten me.

And Alive-Natural Sound is a thing.
