Classic Spins with Marc Durkee

Marc Durkee
There are so many different cool places in the Great White North.

Interestingly enough, this is my second article on a Canadian and I'm presently listening to The Great White North by Bob & Doug McKenzie.

This all just happens to be a series of happy coincidences.

Also, in another coincidence, Marc Durkee is another progressive metaller, but he's from the other side of Canada.

Hailing from Nova Scotia, he's been making music but now he's releasing it under his own name.

Check that stuff out on BANDCAMP and read more below.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

Taco Grande with Ferdy Belland of Phaeton

Phaeton
Welcome to the latest column on Glacially Musical:

Taco Grande.

This column's title was lovingly stolen from the Weird Al Yankovic song of the same name.

Let's face facts, tacos are delicious and they deserve a bit more recognition.

What makes them perfect for musicians is that they're easy to eat while you're on the road. It's hand food, like sandwiches, but way better.

For our first go, we have indie instrumental prog metallers from the uncivilized center of British Columbia, Phaeton.

If it escaped your sphere of influence and didn't go into your personal orbit, check out their self titled debut record on BANDCAMP.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Zero Fire

Zero Fire
If you haven't by now, check out Zero Fire.

You'll be glad that you did.

In the meantime, let's talk pizza while you check out their BANDCAMP.

Talking Pizza with Canadians is always my favorite.

They add those cute, little, superfluous U's and talk about Canada.

Oh wait, I mean Caunada.

1. Pizza is the world's most perfect food. This is not up for debate. Please define pizza as based on your geographical location.

ET: Pizza in Hamilton and Ontario at large is just a mirror of other types of pizza across the globe. We have our typical chains — Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa John's; with the added bonus of Ontario's least favourite pizza company, Pizza Pizza.

Classic Spins with Getaway Van

Getaway VAn
Let's get back together with Getaway Van.

It would appear that they're trying to lose us, but when you're so fancy you have a legit website, how hard you really trying?

By the way, check out GETAWAY VAN's site.

In the meantime, let's get spinning.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

Charlie: I honestly can’t say that I necessarily have a favourite concept album, as it’s not a driving factor for me in my music tastes.

However, if it counts, I’d probably go with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins.

Zack: That's a tough one.  Hmmm, lately I've been really loving ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel’.

The music is beautiful, ranging from incredibly soulful, and emotional acoustic ballads, to intense, almost punk rock adventures through the narrator's story.  With themes of love, loss, and the Holocaust it's hard not to let this one get in your head, and heart.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Redbait

Redbait
From my hometown comes a similarly minded group of individuals called Redbait. They've got a blaster of a 7" coming out soon on NEW AGE RECORDS.

When you're someone who's blessed with the gift of gab and the compunction to utilize words on a more immense scale, it's never difficult to find others.

In that sense, we tend to gravitate towards those who view the world the same way... And who choose to describe their surroundings with slightly more grandiose language. Due to these reasons, Redbait has come to my attention.

Midwestern Proletarian Crust.

So let's talk crust with them.

Classic Spins with Black Sites

Black Sites
Have gotten in with Black Sites?

Just last month they dropped their first album together, Exile.

As my man MC Lars would say, you can sample that flavor over there on the BANDCAMP

The band has been around for sometime, but never together. After working and scraping, they dropped that record.

They've committed the tracks to wax and plastic. So, CD, LP, or digital, pick your poison, but in the meantime, what about this other stuff?

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

I don't like to play favorites, but I happen to be listening to Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime at this very moment.

1 Up with Blaine Gordon of War Curse

War Curse
In case no one has told you lately, Thrash isn't dead.

In fact it's remained so metal that it's basically eating other genres alive. If you find yourself needing more and more thrash metal, don't worry, because Ohio's got you, my friend.

From those reddened shores of landlocked excess comes War Curse.

It has to be said that your ears must come into contact with their newest record. You can pick up Education on CD or LP over at the SVART Records page.

Now, let's find out how they game.

Glacially Musical: My first system was a pong clone, the yellow and black Odyssey 300. What was your first Console?

The original NES.

Pizza Pie Do or Die with Adam Pell of Accursed Spawn

Accursed Spawn
When you need something to smile about, Ottawa, Ontario might just have something for you, or maybe it's just me, being a hockey fan here in St. Louis, MO.

Though 98% of all NHL fans believe in the lie of the Original Six. There were actually four original teams in the National Hockey League and only two of them still exist. Of the two that do not, one was the Ottawa Senators.

Who moved to St. Louis to become the St. Louis Eagles.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with Canada's Capitol City Catterwaullers: Accursed Spawn.

If you're into that heavy music livin', smash down their latest record on BANDCAMP. You even get to buy in Canadian Dollars!

For the low, low price of six Twonies, you can slam your face to The Virulent Host.

But for now, let's talk pizza.

Classic Spins with Hoseman

Hoseman
Welcome back to Glacially Musical, I suppose.

It's been a minute and due to some personal stuff, it was time for me to take a short break and now I'm back on the stick and ready to bring you more of the inanity that you've come to tolerate.

Today we're talking Classic Spins with an Alterna-Rock-no Band from Stamford, CT.

It's rare that we discuss anything with Connecticut Yankees, but we relish the opportunity to do so and without further ado..

HOSEMAN!

Just a bit more ADO...You can snack on their newest album over BANDCAMP.

1. My favorite kind of album is the concept album. The Wall is my absolute favorite. Beyond the amazing songs, it has spectacular nostalgia for me. What's your favorite one and why?

LP Review: "Iltheist" by Iltheist

Iltheist
This has been a long time coming for me. Exceedingly long time readers and twitter followers my remember my promulgations of praise for the English Blackened Death Metal band, Aetherium Mors.

It's been five years now and finally they have come out of hibernation. The only thing is that they've changed up their name to Iltheist.

OK. That's fine by me. It's just great that we've got some new music to consider and today's a great day for death metal.

Things have changed in the previous five years. Their previous releases sounded heavily influenced by Carcass, which is great, but they've moved away from the classic English Death Metal sound.

Though they have always had black metal leanings, this one more of a deathened black metal album. If that's not a thing, let's make it one! With both their name and style changing, it's more difficult to find the threads of the influences and that's a great statement to make about a band.

They were able to keep everything I loved about Aetherium Mors and add in new things I didn't know they needed. Ilthiest is not only a worthy successor to their previous work, but it surpasses everything they have released up till now.

Teaser Video: "Crystal Clarity" by Need All Exchange

Hailing from Brownsville, Texas comes Need All Exchange.

They're a modern metal band who are out to bend all the rules and blend all the sub-genres. Today we find ourselves previewing their up coming video, Crystal Clarity.

It would appear that they're trying to gaslight our childhood memories. I mean, these muppets are ready to fight and kill us all.

Check it out below and see if you're not interested in seeing the whole thing, coming soon!
