Vinyl Review: "Village Creep" by Leechfeast

It's been a little while since, but a band came along and into my emails by the name of Leechfeast.

If you're listening to The Dumb and Dumbest Podcast, perhaps you heard the episode with The Angry Metal Guy where he talked about hating to do negative reviews.

He discussed how he and his team (aka all of us in the metal blogging universe as well) choose their albums to review.

In the end, for us it's a lot like, just shopping. We know the PR firms, the labels, the genres, etc.

As he said, we want to like what we review. We don't ever want to hit anyone with a negative review.

So, this Leechfeast album hits my orbit. It didn't get my blood moving. It was bizarre.It was lethargic and the songs were amorphous. Essentially, there were four very large amoebas going basically wherever they wanted to.

It's time to get as big as Texas. It's not too often that Glacially Musical sets its sights upon the Lone Star State, well, the part of it outside of Austin, anyway.

Vinyl Review: "Fallen Cathedrals" by Ashen Horde

Well, let's start at the beginning.

In the windswept wastelands of Hollywood, California, exists a band so brutal, so avant garde, so nouveaux, that they have no idea what they are.

Their story began in December of 2016, or somewhere thereabouts when their debut album, Nine Plagues, was released.

Really, it probably started before that, but our friends here from the most brutal state dropped a double LP to start off their career.

Ashen Horde went straight Chicago on our collective asses.

Not only did they drop the a deuce to begin it, but it was a double VINYL LP.

So, good on you my boys.

Ashen Horde are one of those bands that's hard to pigeonhole into a heavy metal subgrenre due to just how out they are.

If you turn your head slightly to the northwest, but look past the Pacific Northwest South and into the Pacific Northwest North, you'll see that beautiful city of Vancover, British Columbia.

And if you've ever been there, you'll know precisely why back in the day is 48 40 or fight.

But apart from being a target of American Imperialism in the 19th century, Vancouver is also home to KOSM.

This quintet has a brand new EP that's dropping today.

So of course we're going to talk about tacos.

LP Review: Self titled by Wizard Rifle

In this great big world full of legitimate problems, the one about to be detailed might just not even actually be one.

How in the world am I supposed to refer to a self titled album in the title of a review of said eponymous album?

Nearly 7 years into Glacially Musical, and I don't have a real clue.

This is really a great metaphor for Wizard Rifle's record.

It clocks in at about forty four minutes. That's nearly the perfect length for an album, and from there it gets a little bit weird. Like, there are only five tracks that make up that time. That's an average of over 8 minutes per song.

Even Metallica didn't do that on ...And Justice For All.

The only thing I can be certain of is the fact that this is metal...probably. Being as the band is from the Pacific Northwest, it surprises me very little to hear a bit of a Nirvana/Foo Fighters kind of vibe. (NOTE: Way early Foo Fighters...like before it was a band.... Kinda like Weenie Beenie.)

Kurt Cobain once described Nirvana as sounded like Black Sabbath after an assault by the Bay City Rollers. Wizard Rifle might just be Nirvana after an assault by High On Fire.

Have you noticed the style lately?

I've been putting out loads of these Classic Spins columns.

These column interviews are one of my favorite things to do because it's something where, with my meager amount of spare time to tend to Glacially Musical, I can keep introducing you the reader to new bands and hopefully talk about something you enjoy personally.

Apparently one thing out there that every musician seems to enjoy is music. Really, I mean, who knew honestly?

I thought they were all just sellouts looking for a big payday, but it appears they all have a passion for the art form and have been listening to it for their whole lives.

So, because of that, I'm often times doubling up on Classic Spins even though my particular MO is to only publish one of each column per week...making them...you know..weekly columns.

So, if you're a band reading this and you're wondering where yours is, it's coming. You have my assurances, unless your answers were shorter than the questions...aka my biggest pet peeve.

Today we're hearing from Rockshots recording artists, Ashen Horde. The Californian duo has the countryside reeling from the release of their latest, Fallen Cathedrals.

Mexican Thrashers Hellnite are getting ready to hit the road across Western Canada.

Look out Stampeders, here comes Hellnite.

Interestingly enough, Paolo took the band from Mexico City, Mexico and relocated them to Edmonton, AB.

That might be the strangest relocation story I've ever personally heard as a pretend journalist and as a fan. It's not uncommon to move your and somewhere more advantageous careerwise, but this one is a bit of a puzzler to me.

Especially considering the climate. Mexico City is a very clement place to live. It goes from 43 to 86. That's kind of like San Francisco.

But Edmonton is a hellish nightmare of a wintery deathland.

Five Minute Origin Stories with Mezzoa's Nacho Maldonado

In St. Louis, we are under siege, snow siege. 

Normally our average temperature in March is about 52 degrees F and that's not a weather that's conducive to snow, but this Sunday past, the high was NINE F and we got about 5" of snow which is still on the ground I might add.

Most folks know me as a cold weather kind of guy, but this year has just gotten my goat and it's time for the cold to go away.

When I'm worried about the cold, California over there with all their social programs and sunny weather just kind of pisses me off.

So, the smartest play is to look at a project called Mezzoa. Thankfully they're from....oh damn.

San Diego, Ca.Well it's only 63 degrees F there right now, but that's surely going to be able to create some great metal isn't it?

As someone who's never been there other than the airports, I can't tell you all that much really. There's a band from Texas, if you couldn't guess called Stone Machine Electric.

You should probably check out their latest album, a live record called Viviere over there on the BANDCAMP.

Classic Spins with Deathkings

In 2011, the band now known as Deathkings came together. At that point, they were a nascent group of people who hadn't yet fully realized it.

In time, they came together even more, and then began to resemble Voltron, or maybe The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

Let's go with the latter rather than the former, because Voltron is from St. Louis, and Deathkings are from Los Angeles.

Unlike the Rangers and Haim Saban, Deathkings come from the grittiness of the streets of Los Angeles and their music reflects that.

Their last EP, Ex Nihilio, was released in December. Check it out on BANDCAMP and make friendly on FACEBOOK.

Look, let's be honest. Right now, it's February and half of the time I'm complaining that the weather is either too hot or too cold. So in other words, the world is full of confusion for me right now.

Perhaps I'm in on a weird track, but you can keep yourself sane by accepting that the world is going to burn after we fry like worms on the sidewalk.

In the meantime....check out Heartsick. They're a DIY metal band out of Michigan and you're going to be hard pressed to see a better video, even from the big boys, right about  now.

More and more...bands from the City of Brotherly Love are coming into the queue of my personal conciousness and they're really kicking a lot of ass.

We all know that I love St. Louis, but and I'm sorry Redbait and Torchlight Parade, our local metal scene kind of sucks.

Yet we have a strong metal show going community.

Like, Heavy Metal Kilt Guy, we all know him. I've seen that guy in at least 5 different clubs.

But back to Philly, the loving city where fans huck batteries at baseball players....let's talk about Age of Truth. Check out their latest record, Threshold on BANDCAMP.

1. I try to read at least two books per month, and mostly fail, what's your goal and reality?

C: There's no real specific amount I'd like to read, and I think it'd be hard to make a goal on that since the amount of free time I have is so inconsistent. 

I think my goals are more about how much of that free time I spend on reading. Billions of dollars are spent nowadays, figuring out how to make your electronics all as stimulating as possible, and keep your focus glued to them.

Let's talk about that amazing town, or should we discuss Dead Register first as their own Avril Che will be giving us the skinny on what it's like in Hotlanta.

Dead Register gave us an amazing debut album back in 2016 and a vinyl and cassette release in 2017. This year, they took some time out and released the follow up, Captive.

Oh wait...it's 2019 now, I mean all that stuff happened last year. Let's find out about what it's like to live in the shining city of Atlanta in the country of Spare Oom.

I mean Georgia. Anyway, let's see about the country outside of the airport.

Beer Thirty with Texas Metal Outlaws's Robert Williams

The Texas Metal Outlaws have put out their blistering power/groove metal extravaganza, aka their self titled debut, on vinyl via TMU Records.

If you like anything metal from the 80's, you should probably pick that up via BANDCAMP.

Because it makes absolute perfect sense, instead discussing all that's glorious about that new record, we're going to talk about beer.

1. My personal favorite beer style is the might Double India Pale Ale. The best DIPA in the world is STLIPA by Urban Chestnut. Tell me about your favorite style.

I like cheap domestic beer. My go to beer is Rolling Rock. I can get a twelve pack for about ten bucks at 7-11. If I'm in a fancy mood, I'll spend a little extra and get Dos Equis. 

Years ago there was a 24oz sold at corner stores called the Dos-A-Rita. It was about 7.5 ABV synthetic margarita and if you had three of them in a row you'd fall over and vomit.

You may or may not recall that they're from the snowy city of Edmonton, Alberta up there in the Fabled Canadas.

There's somewhere I've never been personally. So it's nice that we're getting some insight into Western Canada from the views of these metal bands up t here.

1. St. Louis City is my hometown. I've lived here for most of my life in and around the city. Where are you from?

We are from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Actually we were mostly all born and raised here! Our vocalist Dan was born outside the city but came here very young. 

EP Review: "Crucifixion of Hope" by Vulturic Eye

The Crucifixion of Hope

There was time back in my early youth, when heavy metal was still an anomaly. When its definition was still amorphous. 

For years, the two strongest metal bands were Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. These two founding fathers created much of what was to come later.

Metal bands took a side. Either the twin gun attack of Priest or the progressive psychedelia of Sabbath and never the twain shall meet. (Unless you're Iron Maiden and you took the twin gun of the former and the progressiveness of the latter and added in Bruce Dickinson.)

What if you could have a progressive and psychedelic version of Judas Priest? Take those visceral metal riffs and give it a liberal dusting of blues? Could Rob Halford sing Sabbath? (Don't answer that.)

Vulturic Eye has taken these two originators, these revolutionaries, and put them together in a way that Priest is toe tapping or that Sabbath sounds like a chainsaw.

They only saw fit to bless us with a single side of music on this EP. It's time for them to give us a proper album. Explore the space and crush our faces.

Hometown Tales with Jezebel Slade

Do you recall me talking to Jezebel Slade about Food and Touring?

Until such point that I get that new record, it's going to be more of this because their last record, again, under the name Van Halst, was an amazing piece of metal.

It was the kind of metal that rocks the marrow of your bones and can turn your milk sour.

Their new record was to be entitled Jezebel Slade, and it apparently was strong enough to not only alter their direction, but transmogrify the band into that character.

This album is currently highly anticipated by Glacially Musical at least and it's expected to crush the predecessor.

EP Review: "Integra" by Anomalie

The thing about metal is that deep down most metalheads wants to feel like they're listening to something evil when the record starts spinning.

This is doubly true of fans of extreme metal and doom metal. Well, Austrian multi-dimensional metal duo, Anomalie, seem to understand this idea.

25 years ago, Jerry Falwell may have been on TV decrying this record.

This EP, even though it's only twenty seven minutes long treads much ground. It's almost as they had a pile of musical ideas and this was the brainstorming session.

Earlier, I referred to the band as the press release refers to them as I cannot quite divine where to place them in the pantheon of metal subgrenes. Integra features black metal, doom metal, folk metal, acoustic metal, heavy metal, and death metal.

The weird thing is, they're all done superbly well, Nothing sounds like a put on. There's nothing resembling Geddy Lee rapping here.

1. Is there an event you can point to you that made you 

say, "wow, that's the instrument I want to play?" 

Not like guitar or drums, but the reason why you play 

the model you do?

It wasn't necessarily an "event" per se, it was out of necessity. For years, I was playing Schecter 6-string guitars. I thought they had a nice full-bodied sound, but struggled with keeping them functional with my weird-ass tuning.
