MLP Review: "Visitation" by HAR

Visitation
Why is it that the opposite of what we require can give us such fulfillment?

Beer, it's a depressant, but it can make us feel so happy. Like Carl said man, there's nothing like a depressant to chase the blues away.

This is so true when it comes to music.

When we're angry, giant bursts of anger, be it via video game violence, extreme metal, etc allow our anger to abate and bring us back to sensible modes.

When we're feeling sad, we listen to the Blues, but like the Jazzman said, the blues ain't about feeling better, it's about making other people feel bad. As with anyone who's alive and kicking, there are negative emotions circling inside of me.

EP(sorta) Review: "Via" be Derhead

Via
There are times in life where it's important to remember that persistence is the key to everything.

There is nothing in my life that was done right the first time, save being a father. Seems like I totally nailed that on the first try, somehow.

The following is a list of things that have been done more than once by me: changed jobs, gotten married, purchased a house, tried writing, and be a better person.

It could be argued that every single thing in that list, if you look at only my last attempt, have been successes beyond all measure, but the earlier attempts were not as good.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most awe inspiring natural views in The United States of America, if not the entire world. The Colorado River didn't give up when a great stone blocked its path, but continued to push...

LP Review: "Księżyc milczy luty" by Furia

Księżyc milczy luty
Your friend and humble narrator, has been married for nearly seven years at the time of this writing. (Just slightly over a month later, on Repeal Day, it'll have been seven years.)

But in the before time, I found myself single, my era of online dating began.

What else is there to do after having been ensconced in a 12 year plus relationship. It's not like I could begin dating friends, a new circle had to be drawn.

If anyone is curious, yes, we are presently living in domestic bliss in the now time and the rest of this is about the before time.

Online dating is essentially setting yourself up on as many blind dates as is humanly possible. There is very little to go on aside from a photo and a few words of whatever.

Well, what's never visible or enumerated in the profile is the author's crazy, though I did try to get a goodly chunk of mine in there. It's only after digging a little deeper do we see what lurks.

EP Review: "At This Great Depth" by Soothsayer

At This Great Depth
In this post, let's try to answer the eternal question:

What is art?

Glacially Musical takes the stance that the definition of art is merely an act of emotional or creative expression. Meaning, it's art because I say it is, but not quite.

An artistic work is an author/painter/songwriter/etc attempting to convey a message, be it emotional, political, etc. Art is the metaphor for life.

Now, to dig deeper, what is music?

Music is an artistic or commercial expression of something based on aural communication. Certainly there are rules to music. There are norms. Music theory is the most well known concept. Musical keys, when playing play these notes, not those notes, but what if an artist doesn't want their music to sound pretty?

Album Review: "Breach | Submerge" by Cetacean

Breach | Submerge
Famous metal historians, The Beastie Boys, once claimed during the song No Sleep Till Brooklyn, NEVER EVER FALSE METAL!

Since that line was uttered by the punk rockers turned rappers turned punk rockers turned punk rappers turned hipsters who didn't know what they were, there's been a seismic shift.

The rallying cry of Death To False Metal can be found on shirts, hats, and probably coffee mugs.

In the past I've spoken about the tribunal of heavy metal and it's still very much alive. In the past 25 years, Black Metal, Folk Metal, Pagan Metal, and whatever Steve'n'Seagulls are have all worked hard to change what metal is and what it can be.

Growing up listening to Black Sabbath, it was just a guitar, a bass, drums, and vocals. Then keyboards, later banjos, and whatever instruments they have in Finland. Recently a band from Canada was playing a French Horn....

Album Review: "Jedva Čekam Da Nikad Ne Umrem" by Pogavranjen

Jedva Čekam Da Nikad Ne Umrem

Years ago I had an old friend whom I always took to be a little bit weird.

I suppose my thinking he was weird is why my wife didn't much care for him...as she considers me to be about 8 cards short of a full deck.

Well, my buddy was a big fan of music. His musical tastes were a bit off the beaten path to say the least. He always told me about how when it came to music, for him it was the weirder, the better.

This fellow is the only person I have ever known to have a raging man crush on Mike Patton. Anything Patton did, my buddy walked over the CD shop next to his place and picked it up.  That is everything except Faith No More which he viewed as sellout crap that allowed Patton to be weird for a living. My friend's taste in music always stuck with me to a point.
