LP Review: L'appel Du Vide" by Space Coke

L'appel Du Vide
Ok, you have my attention, Space Coke. Apparently, this band is from the United States. Their album cover and title surely make me think they're from England...again back to the cover...

It's a knight who looks to have been offed during the Wars of the Roses, but it's all good.

Recently, I got metalplained on the internet about how Blue Cheer is metal. They aren't, but what if they were?

Well, they still wouldn't be Space Coke, but it's the beginning at least. There is an organist in this band. It's especially noteworthy, because when's the last time you saw that?

If you dig that Hammond Organ sound, this album is gonna scratch that itch we both have. I'm with you. Gimme dat swirl. Space Coke's songs aren't built around the organ, but neither is it hidden.

These songs certainly aren't Rush, but the textures created are thick, fuzzy, and a just a little bit caustic. They layer their songs and everybody takes a turn. Everybody shines.

L'appel Du Vide is kind of like what might have happened if Iron Butterfly lived up to their  name and reputation...except that presumably, Space Coke isn't so stoned they could say Garden of Eden would it have been required of them.

LP Review: "Arcanum" by Space Witch

Arcanum
The year was circa 1984 and my cousins and I were fighting off our yawns.

It was a very late night for us, but it was Saturday night and what was certain to become our absolute favorite show was coming on at about 12:00am.

To this day, my best recollection of that night was seeing this giant wave of black. It looked like a wrinkly clam shell. It was...well I remember it existing.

The next morning, we discussed this show. My cousins remembered it vividly and told me how great it was, but my memory banks only held a vision of that strange clam shell.

Suffice it to say, the wait, the pushing, and the exhaustion were not worth it to me that evening. So badly did I desire to be a Dr. Who fan. Later I did see full episodes and they did not impress me much.

Double Vinyl Review: Eponymous by Transona Five

Transona 5
As of this post, we have written a metric ton of posts about music of all stripes and statures.

The whole purpose of this blog and what make it run, is the idea that new music doesn't suck and that there is plenty of great music out there being written, recorded, and released by new bands, by new labels, and that these new voices are just as valid as the old ones.

In fact, I have pontificated countless times that we are living in the golden age of music and that this is literally the best time to be alive in terms of music.

You don't agree? Well, it's just like watching TV. We're in the best era for TV too. This is because of all the specialization. We no longer are beholden to values of 20 years ago. We are no longer having to watch just the most sanitized tv or listen to the most sanitized music.

Album Review: "Pterodactyl Sky" by SpaceCream

Pterodactyl Sky
I often talk about things that have shaped my life in some way.

When listening to Pterodactyl Sky for the first, second, and now third times, I'm taken back to a time in my life that I don't think about too much.

When I was 19, I had a girlfriend who was a Rocky Horror Picture show nerd. So, our first "date" was my virgin appearance at the show.

Yup, I was auctioned.

It turned out that many of my friends at that time were big fans of the show, and a few even acted in the cast at the old Avalon Theater on Kingshighway in South St. Louis. When I pass that, now, decrepit building, I cry a little on the inside.

Even though I was convinced to act in the cast once, Rocky never left a huge impression on me. Sure I enjoy it, and try to take it in when I can, but I'd never be one of those people who check it out weekly.
