Vinyl Review: ST 37 "Self-Titled"

This week has been interesting because we've gone from the fewest number of people that can be performing together...that's two by the way all the way up to now six people.

There are SIX people in this band.

Then, there are even four extra people on here.

I'll fully cop to being a curmudgeon, but I don't know another 2 people that I'm willing to give my time to in order to make a musical project, much less another 9.

Seriously.

There are TEN PEOPLE ON THIS RECORD.

ST 37 is basically the Wu Tang Clan of whatever the hell kind of music this is that they're playing. Speaking of the music....let's move in to that area shall we.

A brief internet search has them listed as being a psych rock band.

Vinyl Review: "They Made Her A Criminal" by The Transgressors

They Made Her A Criminal
Let's talk album art, tracklists, and all such manner of things like that.

In the old days, when we all went to record stores, how many of us never purchased a CD, cassette, or LP just based on bitchin' cover art?

I know that I did at least 400 times....that was if they didn't have anything I was looking for that week.

My first taste of Black Metal came from purchasing a CD with a cool painting on the front. Don't ask me what it was though, as that was 1998 and this is 2019.

I also didn't know it was Black Metal, that black metal was a thing, or what that thing I'd never heard of sounded like.

So, long story short, there was a box sent to me featuring a goodly number of things and such. This album was in that box. There were no requests to speak of about reviews, but hey, who doesn't like hearing about kick ass music...

Sure, it's a little bit older than yesterday's album, but if you've not heard about it, it's new to you, just like it was for me.

So, it's time to unpack this stuff.

Vinyl Review: "Have A Nice Trip" by Evil Triplet

Have A Nice Trip
This one is a little bit late, but let's totally pretend like 2018 and 2019 have merged into one super year for music.

This year, I've been lucky enough to have two of my favorite avant garde metal acts releasing a new record. (This is where we're pretending, because this album came out in 2018...)

Follow up records for those odd artists are always a great time, but those times are fraught with peril really.

Anyway, let's talk about Evil Triplet for a moment shall we?

Hailing from the wild world of Austin, TX, Evil Triplet is a...well they're a band..of some sort. In the vaguest sort of way, they're a metal band. They play riffs, guitar solos, and sing about aliens and Satan.

So, that's metal enough for this bloke.

If you need more penciling in and pigeonholing of them, it's probably best to say that the play Evil Triplet music. Look, most times...when someone says this, it's a damned lie and we all know it, but I can think of no other bands that play in the same style, but others may play in the same vein.

Vinyl Review: "A Message of Love" by Nazi Gold

A Message of Love
Before we get started, let me say that because it is 2019, I had to think about this before even agreeing to listen to it due to the name.

Glacially Musical is a left leaning website and against all forms of fascism, foreign and domestic.

But this album and group came, and went before the current neo-fascist buildup in The Age of Trump. So, moving on.

Imagine if it were 2018 and you just discovered this guy named Paul McCartney and his latest record, Egypt Station.

At this point, you're just wowed by this man and his art. Naturally, it's time to start digging. Look at him, he's a bit on the aged side, so you know he's got more records than just this one. The likelihood of his having pulled a T-Model Ford is pretty low.

So, now you're digging and digging. Oh, here's all of these collaborations.

Now there's this group called Wings?

Vinyl Review: "Code Word" by The Moles

Code Word
Famous face painter and noted lip syncer, Gene Simmons, has stated many times that rock is dead.

His partner, slightly less famous kabuki facer and even bigger lip syncer, Paul Stanley has said that ASCAP and the music industry should be taking care of the up and comers.

Much like Kiss's stance on lip syncing, their takes on what is happening in the world of new music is, shall we say, fractured?

Those faking old fogies aren't the only ones out there who're a bit concerned, confused, or outright wrong about the world of rock music though.

One just has to peruse Bandcamp, the blogosphere, or any social media outlet, they're going to find about 15,000,000 million new bands to check through. It's impossible to not find a single one to enjoy and fall in love with.  That's my current State of the Musical Union Speech.

Now, if you're an underground indie rock legend with a lot of friends and a record to make..... what could you do?

Vinyl Review: "Victim/Nonvictim Pt. 1" by Quin Galavis

VICTIM/NONVICTIM Pt. 1
Before we move forward...

Out at night...

The Stars are big and bright....

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS!

We are heading back to Texas for a first. Quin Galavis is now the first artist to receive three vinyl reviews here at Glacially Musical.

We're quite sure indeed that he'll take the non-existent award and cherish it as it should be cherished. Galavis is a delightful enigma currently residing (at least close to) Austin, TX

He's an enigma to me as we've never spoken, crossed paths, gotten an interview, or even exchanged words via Twitter.

I heard tale he enjoyed my review of his double LP.

There's really nothing for me to tell you about his social media presence, because I know nothing about it. Does he even have one?

7" Vinyl Review: "Pyramid of Skull EP" by Skeleton

Pyramid of Skulls
It's been a long time since the days of checking out the Seven Inches at the underground record store.

In fact, that's never really been a part of my life, but I am reading the Beastie Boys book...and they spend loads of time talking about that from way back when in their hometown of New York City.

Now, the death metal EPs....

Those I kind of remember, but that was right before CDs exploded and killed everything that was good an holy in the world..at least in terms of physical music.

Today, we consider a 7" of interminable length. This thing, if you take it front to back, is about a solid five minutes of music.

Yes....five minutes.

Vinyl Review: "Clean Feeling" by PLAX

Clean Feeling
The Cosmos is testing me. There is simply no other explanation as to why this is happening.

This reviewer is, frankly, a tepid consumer of Punk Rock. That's just the be all end all of it. There are some Punk Rockers out there that shiver me to my very soul, but that list is very short.

You may have noticed the renaissance of punk music here lately. Absolutely Not made it into our vinyl reviews and American Standards did a great interview for us.

Now today, we have Austin, TX based punk band, PLAX courtesy of the Super Secret Records imprint.

My lack of understanding Punk Music probably goes back to the 70's when Punk and Metal refused to co-exist peacefully. Even when punk and metal joined into thrash...there was still strife. So perhaps, my aversion, my personal prejudice, et al is just in my blood....because it goes a long way back.

Vinyl Review: "The Battery Line" by Quin Galavis

The Battery Line
Let's say a few  nice words about mile stones if you don't mind my going off on a small tangent before we get into the meat of this review.

It doesn't seem all that long ago when a band first had two album reviews here, but that was nearly five years ago.

Today, Quin Galavis becomes the first artist to get the vinyl treatment for a second time. (Confidentially, there's another one in the kitty though.)

Glacially Musical is rapidly closing in on our 1000th post. In fact, this is post number 997. In my life, there's been a lot of t hings I've done, but this one is certainly among the longest, most successful, and very satisfying. You may have noticed that for the past two weeks I was a bit off the grid, just because, a break from this behemoth was required. As a small site that we do on the side, it's hard to keep up all of the content.

Thank you for enjoying the ride with us.

Vinyl Review: "Ti Bon Ange" by Suspirians

Ti Bon Ange
What you may or may not know about me, dear readers, is that this guy right here is the biggest nerd you'll ever meet.

Sure, most days, pimping brutal death metal, drinking craft beers, shaving with a vintage safety razor, and having a beautiful family, and living in a beautiful home that needs work...

You might not ever guess that I'm reading a fantasy novel, a Red Dwarf novel, and thinking about the space time continuum.

The eddies of the time stream fascinate me to no end. Recently, I had a very long dream about such things. In the dream, my biggest childhood dream could have been realized should I have been willing to go back in time and make a singular different choice.

Now, we could speak about the Mirror of Erised here and discuss my life and the ramifications, but what struck me about that dream was my understanding of what would have happened should the deal have been accepted.

Vinyl Review: "Microwave Dreams" by John Wesley Coleman III

Microwave Dreams
Have you ever had a really bad day?

Today, well, frankly, it wasn't that bad, but it was a rough one. Aside from the birthday party, the battery on my hybrid hitting purple, and having to go get a new extension cord for my new electric lawnmower....

I'm beyond wiped.

The irony of my complaining about technology not suiting me while writing about being a Luddite, well, that's certainly not lost on me whatsoever.

I suppose, it's just that somethings we don't need to improve upon. Cars? Yeah, we need to improve upon that. I drive a hybrid for several reasons. Naturally, the fact that on a normal week my Prius gets better gas mileage than my Honda Civic did on it's best day is wonderful. Helping the planet is also a great thing.

Vinyl Review: "My Life of Steel and Concrete" by Quin Galavis

My Life of Steel and Concrete
It's kind of true confession time.

About five or so years ago I made a discovery. On my commute home, NPR's All Things Considered was discussing a documentary that was coming out about a man with OCD.

Up to that point, like many others, I made jokes about being OCD about this or that. It had never honestly occurred to me that I might have that particular mental illness.

As the gentleman talked about what his life was like and how he saw the world, I realized, that's kind of what I see.

The idea that it was abnormal to take someone not giving me a courtesy wave on the highway personally was so strange. That's how it always had been for me. Rudeness, inconsideration, etc they get me and as someone on the internet, I tend to get put off.

Vinyl Review: "The Flesh Is Weak" by James Chance and the Contortions

The Flesh Is Weak
Here's something about me that many folks who read these pages may not realize...

I'm a big fan of etymology.

After having seen about what seems like a hundred broadway shows now, there's a phrase that always tends to stick out in my head, all that jazz.

(This might seem like it's totally random, but get inside my head, read the thoughts and then come back out and tell me if it's scatterbrained or totally ordered and logical.)

(HINT: It's totally number two.)

Jazz...that's something that was rebellious about 70 years before the Rolling Stones were rebellious about 50 years ago right? Well, rebellious music that's been out rebelled normally doesn't really resonate with me and both the Stones and Jazz seem like my grandfather's music at this point.

Double Vinyl Review: "otherworld" by eviL tripLet

otherworld
Please allow me to wax nostalgic for a moment. To most of my readers, and to my most frequent contributor Danny, Glacially Musical seems like an extremely glamorous endeavor!

Well, there was a time in the past, most likely before you ever read the words on this page when I was simply writing about the music I discovered rather than brand new music from the labels, artists, and management folks themselves.

You may notice that this year already has more posts than the first two combined and I'll top number three in a matter of weeks. As we barrel towards our 1,000th post, let me tell you a bit about what it's like to be the gatekeeper of this most prestigious and world renowned blog.

It's world renowned because I get sent stuff from literally every hemisphere. Often times not even swearwords directed at me. When this whole thing started, it was me writing about the music I purchased. So, there were very little negative things to say, because I typically vet my purchases quite well.
