DLP Review: "Our Riches" by Under A Full Moon

Our Riches
Do you ever go through a period where a certain kind of metal really catches you and without even realizing it...there are about 15 different Funeral Doom Metal records in the pile?

Certainly I'm not the only one right?

If you ask me, and you kind of did, we're presently talking about the most underrated subgenre in Heavy Metal.

Music falls into two major categories for me: background or foreground noise. Funeral Doom Metal is the only genre of music that allows you both options!

So there's that.

Today's subject, Under A Full Moon, is a side hustle from Evan of FVRLVRN and producer/soundsmith extraordinaire Gjøran. Both of them aren't precisely known for this kind of music. So, it's nice to see another side.

As for this record. This is the best band I've heard since UN fucked up my world. Our Riches is a bleak wasteland of morbid depravity. This record will crush your soul and possible suck out your will to live.

As it should.

LP Review: "Wanderer" by Marsh Dweller

Wanderer
For posterity's sake, this album was released in October of last year via Eiwhaz Recordings.

This year, the venerable cassette label, Tridroid Records, is re-releasing it via that particular format.

For the purpose of clarity, this album is being reviewed via the digital files and not the cassette tape...as I don't really know if I have a deck.

Marsh Dweller is essentially the solo project of one, John Kerr. He plays all the instruments and sings all the vocals.

Unlike some other solo jaunts, he is playing the drums. His press photos show him at the kit. Nice touch.

Truth in advertising is all I'm really wanting in this world. In this case, Marsh Dweller have completely done that. Wanderer is the perfect title for this album. In the basest terms, it's a black metal record, but in a broader term, it's immense.

No stone is left unturned. Musically this is an an odyssey. There was a point when it got really mellow. It made me wonder my stream got messed up and turned into another band. (NOTE: It did not.)

Anyone looking for paint by numbers music should jog on, but those of us who feast on adventure will find this to be an all you can eat buffet.

Vinyl Review: "Anomie" by Violet Cold

Anomie
By now, anyone who's going to entertain this record by Violent Cold may have already done so, but aside from slivers and snippets, this is the first time I've listened to the whole thing.

But maybe, I'm wrong about that. In fact, it's got to be certain that I'm incorrect.

Let's head backwards in time and explore the depths of my personal folly and how I could have been saved by my own hands.

Curtis Dewar of Dewar PR, who knows I'm a big vinyl nut, sent me a message saying that I'd better jump on Violet Cold's latest album before the preorders take them all.

Being perpetually behind in my emails, Anomie hadn't gotten a listen yet. At that point, it was relaxing time, beer thirty, and just general off the clockedness of what might have been the weekend.

Vinyl Review: "Into the Kingdom of Graves" by Tyrants Blood

Into the Kingdom of Graves
In one of the greatest movies of all time, Cary Elwes uttered this famous line:

"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something."

This allusion has come up in my introductions before, but in the United States are are looking at something we have never seen before.

What has happened before is the division, the strife, and the protests. The lines are clearly drawn. Where we go from there is anyone's guess.

What I remind myself everyday is that Jimi Hendrix wrote his arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner while Richard M. Nixon held the White House and in the backdrop of The Vietnam War. I have total faith that the artistic community will have loads of inspiration in the coming years.

LP Review: Self Titled by Uprising

Uprising
Are you aware that I keep myself fairly anonymous?

For instance, seeing my face is pretty rare and it kind of kills me that I cannot share with you photos of my daughter. She's my absolute pride and that's only for certain people.

So, yes, there is an amount of anonymity from me. If you really look hard, you can find my face and hear my voice though. Especially in my vinyl reviews.

I can't even tell you why I'm keeping my profile low, just that it sucks that it's become my de rigueur. It is truly for the best, but it makes it hard to connect with my readers on social media.

So, sorry that I'm not more personable. It would be awesome if I could tell you that I live in Dutchtown, St. Louis City. (But I that's not where I live currently, but I did in the past!) Even though, my head's kept down, I'm still a bit of a social media gadfly.

Split EP Review: "Split" by Twingiant and Into The Storm

My faithful twitter followers will know about my great love of tea.

In fact, I just poured some hot water out of my work electric kettle in order to brew up a strong cup of Japanese Green Tea that I recently purchased at the local Asian grocery store.

Picking out new tea is a lot like picking out music in 2016. Go to Bandcamp, Amazon, iTunes, or any place folks pick up music and it's nearly impossible to weed this all down.

Of course there are a couple good ways choosing tea, you could always ask the advice of someone who's had all of those teas. It's also a good idea to pick tea that's made in the same style as one you like. This past trip, I was trying to get a box of Takaokaya green tea that I got in Chicago, but Jay's didn't have it. So I got Tian Hu Shan instead...

It's another Japense green tea.

But there's also that third option. They also make variety packs of tea. Ahmad Teas has a great 20 pack of afternoon and breakfast teas that I usually grab when I've got go out of town.

EP Review: "Chassit" by Heavy Temple

Chassit
Do you enjoy spicy foods?

These days, my food is not as spicy as it once was, but I'm returning to eating food that bites back.

It's just so metal.

Thinking back though... try to recall one of the first times you ever put a hot pepper into your mouth. That time I mistook a jalapeno for a peppercini has never left my memory.

Being in a world of pain at age ten over a single bite of food...well that's hard to forget.

Has the memory of that pain come flooding back to you? Did you think to yourself, well, this is the most painful food ever, but it tastes delicious! That's probably not what anybody said upon feeling the relief of the capsaicin's dispersal.

Album Review: Self Titled Debut from Wicked Inquisition

Wicked Inquisition
I can remember a time when music like this no longer existed. When Doom Metal/Original Metal/Whatever was a thing of the past.

It was that stuff Sabbath did so long ago.

Over the years many different bands have some along playing that original metal, or Transitional Metal as I'm going to start calling it.

It was heavy and dark, but there was still some Jimi Hendrix and Cream in the riffing. It was still a shade on the peace and love side, at least musically.

Today, we've got a group of young men from Minnesota who're finally releasing their debut record for us: Wicked Inquisition. Like the masters of the genre, their band, debut album, and a song all have the same name.
