Beer Thirty with Max from Bane

Let's head over to the greatest city in the French world. Sorry, Quebec City.

So, sorry Paris.

Oh wait... St. Louis is...FRENCH...aww crap. Well, those Montreal folks are pretty good people and the province of Quebec is proudly French-Canadian. They were also kind enough to trade Jaroslav Halak to use all those years ago.

Sure, the Blues made mistakes going forward, but that was a great day. Another thing that makes Montreal great is this band called Bane. This Blackened Death Metal Mini-Horde is riding high on the digital, cassette, and CD release of their third album, Esoteric Formulae, but the amazing news is that next month they'll be smelling that sweet new vinyl smell.

Get all your pre-ordering on over BANDCAMP should you be interested in the sweet, sweet nectar of death metal on the grill.

While you're previewing that, let's talk beer.

1. My personal favorite beer style is the might Double India Pale Ale. The best DIPA in the world is STLIPA by Urban Chestnut. Tell me about your favorite style.

Album Review: Nephrolith: Paleness of the Bled World

It had been several weeks since I had listened to any black metal, and the new release from Nephrolith was a suitable reintroduction to the genre.

It is a complex, modern take which achieves a unique clarity without sounding polished.  The vocals, while still harsh and growled, are surprisingly discernible.  This is a positive, as the lyrics are excellent and relay dark tales of personal anguish.

The result is a powerful and melodic black metal sound, which at times veers into death metal, while regularly including the genre specific blast beats and tremolo picking.

Brutal passages are connected by crisp and powerful melodic musical interludes.  It is difficult to compare Nephrolith to any other black metal band, because at different times they are reminiscent of different bands and different eras of the genre.

LP Review: "Grand Noir" by Eschatos

Grand Noir
Oh you know what I'm going to say.

How many of my faithful friends and readers can remember the character of Louie on MTV's The State?

He was the guy who came in and said his catch phrase over and over again. As a young lad in my mid-teens, the joke flew over my head.

To me, it was just a funny guy saying a funny thing. Only much later did the joke get revealed to me. Louie was a response to the pressure MTV put on The State to have a quotable recurring character.

So they made the worst one they could think of. Frankly, that kind of thinking is just brilliant, but as Americans, our attention spans have been dwindling for decades. That's why terrible comedians like Larry The Cable Guy make millions. Short attention spans and catch phrases.

Album Review: "Apokalypse" by Diabolizer

Encyclopedia Metallum recently published a map which shows the number of metal bands per million people in Europe.  Predictably Finland (630), Sweden (428), Iceland (341) and Norway (299) dominate the metal world.

Turkey lags far, far behind with its paltry six metal bands per million Turks. Yet, what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in quality.

"Apokalypse" by Turkish blackened death metal band Diabolizer, contains enough satanic brutality to bridge the per capita satanic brutality gap.

Album Review: "Advent of the Human God" by Necronomicon

Advent of the Human God
Let's talk about metal sub-genres!

The collective groan is palpable all seven of you reading this right now.

This is a common topic here, but this is on of those times  when it's really important to discuss them. It's pretty well known that I am a big fan of Death Metal, with Tampa Bay Death Metal being my favorite.

So, this email arrives asking if I would like to check out Blackened Death Metal Band Necronomicon.

Blackened Death Metal isn't Black Metal, which it's well known that is not one of my favorites, right? I have no strong feelings regarding Black Metal, but it's just not my bag. To me, Blackened Death Metal is a bit of a useless name meaning Carcass like death metal that sings about Satan and his underlings....and I can get behind that.
