"Occult Delight" by Mode Moderne

The other day, this guy was just sitting at his desk minding his own business when my iPhone buzzes to let me know that an email has arrived. Its contents held an invitation to check out "Occult Delight" by a band that was unfamiliar to me.

Sounds good to me!

So, who are these guys?

Upon hearing them for the first time, the most common reaction would have to be are they British? Well, British Columbian....(Is that a thing?). This group hails from the far west of Canada, Vancouver, BC.

This is a new wave band through and through, but being just a small boy, who was into heavy metal, when new wave was new, all new wavey things still sound kind of new to me. Only recently did I discover that I kind of like the Psychedelic Furs...

Living Statues
Well everybody has a good handle on the concept of new wave now right? It is 2014 now. So, the description of the style will be bypassed.

When my eyes are closed, or my mind in this case, what comes out is nearly the Psychedelic Furs, but this is not a derogatory comment. For starters, The Modes have a much, much better singer than the Furs.

The vocals are full and rich with a nice touch of melancholy. Their timbre is very reminiscent of the guitars' sound. Full, chorusy, and a bit erie. All in all the this is a very cohesive record. The guitars, the bass, and the drums, and the vocals all blend well together. There is no star in this band. They are all working towards a common goal.

The songs, much like the band, flow together very cohesively. This is another record that is best listened to as a single entity. The lyrics are thematically linked. The title of the record should give you a good hint as to what that theme could be.

Fans of the Psychedelic Furs, She Wants Revenge and the Airborne Toxic Event will find a lot to like about this band. This album is release on Jan 21, 2014 and can be purchased via Bandcamp here.
