Who wants Survival?
In this rare instance, we are talking about Survival Horror. This is a topic that's never been discussed on these pages. In nearly six years of music journalism excellence, we (there used to be others) have never discussed what it was like to be a member of the Raccoon City PD.
NOTE: I did see a Raccoon City PD T-shirt at Slayer...
Nick Noro, he's ready to get real about what's going on in that fictional town. He's the Roger Waters of Post-Thrash something something metal band, Survival.
This spring they released their latest record, Murkin Hella Fools, and you can check that out on BANDCAMP. You can also get to the bottom of their mysteries on FACEBOOK.
Apparently, Nick, like this Nik (the one writing) likes video games.
Check out this meeting of the Nicks. (Niks?)
Glacially Musical: My first system was a pong clone, the yellow and black Odessey 300. What was your first Console?
Nick Noro: A lot of my friends had consoles and pokemon and all that stuff years before I caught on. My first was an N64 when I was 8 years old, second grade. Then, later, when I was 10 or 11 I figured out how to run PC games like half life, Unreal Tournament, Alien vs Predator.
GM: My stepdad was certain we'd destroy the TV playing Pong so we had to play it in secret, either when he was a sleep or when he was out of the house. Did you have to jump through any hoops to play games?
NN: The only hoop I really had to jump through was like... they would make me do some work for them (cut down a tree, pick weeds, paint, whatever) then they would buy me a toy or game that I wanted. And man back then N64 games were usually around $40-$50. GM: What about hand held games? Is that something you ever got into? You: I remember I had a gameboy color for a while! I was probably like 9 years old? I remember seriously wishing they could translate half life into a gameboy game. It probably would have sucked but I remember that was an idea I had when I was like 9 years old.
GM: The idea of not being able to play something drove me nuts, so I started playing games in their original Japanese. Did you ever get into imports?
NN: Hmmm.... I don't think so. I DID do this with singles and cds for music however. When you could buy CDs and tapes at Tower Records/ Warehouse outlets.
GM: What's your favorite sports game?
NN: Bro easy - Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3
GM: Dragon Warrior got me hooked on turn based RPGs, something that's still happening. What's your favorite style of game and what was the first one you played?
NN: Its a toss up! Survival Horror (RE, Silent Hill, maybe you throw in Dead Space) and First Person Shooters (Unreal Tournament, Quake 2, Quake 3, Half Life). I was also a big fan of certain games where you could toggle 3rd person and 1st person perspective (There was a Duke Nukem game where you could do this - Quake 3 you could do this). But I wanna give a shoutout to DEUS EX - one of my all time favorites that was sort of an RPG FPS crossover.
GM: Favorite system?
NN: I can't say PC obviously. But it is NOT N64 for me. Those games were fuckin weak compared to Resident Evil, Silent Hill. I'm gonna have to go with PS2. I'm gonna go with Gamecube solely because they remasted Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 on Gamecube. And it had Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 0.
