Hollow Leg |
I have not, but being honest, this blogger still has a pretty exposed hatred for Jacksonville, FL. You want to know why?
Because of American Football.
1. Jacksonville got one of the expansion teams we were supposed to have gotten in St. Louis.
2. Jacksonville got the owner we were supposed to get in St. Louis, Shahid Khan.
Anyway, hockey and soccer are better sports (Fight Me. Fair warning, I'm three lessons into Karate.) than the NFL anyway.
Jacksonville, FL is not only the home to the football usurpers, but also to the acclaimed doom/sludge band Hollow Leg. Once again, they're rather willing to jump into my fray.
Make sure you read all the way to the end...there's a surprise inside!
As always, FACEBOOK and BANDCAMP are your friends.
1. Is there an event you can point to you that made you say, wow, that's the instrument I want to play? Not like guitar or drums, but the reason why you play the model you do?
There’s so many artists and events thatve influenced our gear choices, but a lot is steeped in classic rock sounds mixed with 80s thrash bands...
As a guitar player it was always what Tony Iommi and James Hetfield played because those were/are my favorite players...
2. How do you write a song?
It can happen several different ways; it can come out of a jam, where we all play together and come up with something or it can come from a riff either Tom or Brent had worked out and then bring it to the collective to pick apart and turn it into a Hollow Leg song.
Or Brent will bring a more finished song that was demoed at home and he and John work through it to work out flow...
All these days work well for us... acoustic stuff and instrumentals are more spontaneous
3. How many concept records do you own? Could you ever write one?
Collectively we have a lot of concept records, between classic rock, prog, and our love of Iron Maiden lots of concept records...
We def work with concepts on each record, and they all have some overlying theme attached, but CROWN was a concept in full. Tim (Creter) wrote this really cool conceptual story and he and Scott formed lyrics out of that, artwork and track listing order were all based on the concept for that one.
Would we get that deep into a concept again? Well maybe, but more likely not.
4. Who's influence is most evident in your music? The least?
All our influences are part of what we do... Tom is definitely the classic rock guy (though all of us dig that stuff), but Toms bass playing is very heavily influenced by players like Geezer of course and also the dude from Grand Funk...Brent is equal parts Metallica/Sabbath/Failure and that is pretty evident cause he comes out with the bulk of the riffs...
John has an eclectic taste as well, but rooted in bands like Deftones for sure... Scott’s taste are also all over the board and definitely has his own style which is more a combination of influences from Lemmy to HR to Mike Patton... but all of us are Sabbath fiends and make that a focal point when writing for sure
5. Which one of your songs is the one your the most proud of?
Tough one to answer because they’re all special to us of course, but songs like Shattered which have been played live since the first record, 8 Dead from the Abysmal record, and Coils from Crown and God Eater are all live staples and that means they work well to crowd which is number one... our newest record, however, has material that we believe will be some of our favorites and hopefully crowd favorites as well going forward
6. Sum up your latest record for us.
New record is titled Civilizations (first time we’ve said that publicly) we are super proud/excited about it!
Really feel this is the best representation of Hollow Leg to date, lots of different sounds and song types working through the record and mixed and mastered by Kent Stump of Wo Fat, he did an amazing job locking down a killer overall sound, and we’re just really happy with it and can’t wait for people to hear it!
We should be releasing a track from it later this summer and looking for early 2019 release at this point Stay tuned!
